Qualifications:

 

Ability to establish and maintain conversations using Sign Language or willingness to learn

Ability to maintain effective working relationships

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Ability to work with children with disabilities

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Minimum clerical skills      

Paraprofessional aide certificate required once employed

Willingness to participate in ongoing training in the area of visual/auditory impairments

Willingness to assist with toileting, feeding and other self-help skills

 

Primary Purpose:

 

Provide assistance for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and other students with sensory impairments as needed

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to federal, state and local policies and procedures related to special education aides.
  2. Participate in planned in services and professional growth activities.
  3. Assist in carrying out the instructional program for assigned students.
  4. Assist in maintaining student records and audit folders.
  5. Assist in preparation, use and maintenance of instructional materials, equipment and technology.
  6. Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises and drills.
  7. Attend professional meetings as required.
  8. Maintain communication between home and school, and keep a daily log of information about the student’s activities as needed.
  9. Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to auditory/visual impairments.
  10. Interact in a professional manner with administrators, teachers, staff, students, visitors or other individuals and participate as an effective team member.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or Instructional Officer for Deaf Education, Vision Service and AT or as determined by specific area of assignment.

Equipment Used:

 

Personal computer, copier, audiovisual equipment and other assistive devices.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling; regular heavy lifting of students. Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
