*This assignment is split 50/50 between Navo MS and Savannah ES campuses.
Primary Purpose:
Responsible for coordinating and facilitating Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings, including planning and preparing compliance documents for students eligible for Special Education Services. Provides consultation to teachers, parents, support personnel, and community agencies. This includes but is not limited to consultation concerning the individualized educational program, its implementation, and strategies for learning. Acts as a source to ensure the district complies with all legal and compliance issues associated with special education at the local, state, and federal levels.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification
- Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited university
- Master’s degree preferred
- Certification as required by the State Board for Educator Certification in the area of special education
- Diagnostician certification in progress preferred
Experience
- Three (3) years of successful special education teaching experience
Special Knowledge and Skills
- Working knowledge of federal laws, state guidelines and local district policies
- Understands the function of the ARD Committee meeting and an understanding of special education law and procedures
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Effective communication skills with others, as well as the ability to work collaboratively
- Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Demonstrates ethical and professional practices and responsibilities.
- Conducts self professionally and ethically in all job responsibilities and roles.
- Develop and maintain collaborative, positive relationships with families, educators, campus personnel, the community, outside agencies, and related service personnel.
- Coordinates with testing diagnostician regarding special education student evaluation needs.
- Communicates effectively with multi-disciplinary team members, parents, students, campus personnel, and district-level special education personnel.
- Applies and demonstrates knowledge of program planning and instructional decision-making.
- Demonstrates knowledge of eligibility criteria and procedures for identifying students with disabilities and determining the presence of educational needs.
- Demonstrates skills necessary for scheduling, time management, and meeting organization, and eligibility folder management.
- Effectively and accurately utilizes the special education data management software system.
- Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate curricula and instructional strategies for students with disabilities.
- Participates as a multi-disciplinary team member who determines special education eligibility for students and makes appropriate instructional recommendations as IEP goals and objectives are developed.
- Serves as a case manager and resource to campuses by updating campus personnel regarding local, state, and federal rules and regulations and ensuring the campus/district maintains compliance with all regulations associated with special education.
- Upon request, provides training to district and campus staff and parents of students with disabilities regarding special education support, services, and strategies.
- Serves as an active participant in campus and district projects and teams.
- Schedules or assists in scheduling Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings and notifies parents of the ARD meeting, including distributing the ARD calendar to appropriate ARD Committee members in a timely fashion.
- Ensures that the Individual Transition Plan elements are completed in the applicable cases.
- Notifies all appropriate school personnel of ARD meeting / ARD schedule changes.
- Ensures that federal/state timelines are met with respect to functions of ARD Committee meetings: requests for additional assessments and required timelines set by ARD Committee.
- Monitors ARD paperwork completed by campus personnel completes and submits ARD paperwork within 72 hours of the meeting.
- Completes required documentation and reports required by the special education department by due dates (e.g., transportation forms, extended service year (ESY) forms, October Snapshot, etc.).
- Maintains systematic communication between special and general education personnel with respect to ARD meetings and decisions, IEPs, students’ accommodations, and instructional concerns and progress.
- Completes appropriate ARD supplements and collects appropriate data.
- Follows end-of-year procedures and submits appropriate summer program student recommendations.
- Assists campus administrators in maintaining compliance with all federal, state and local policy as it applies to students with disabilities.
- Attends and participates in district, departmental and campus meetings as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Department of Special Education.
