This vacancy will remain open until filled.   Position will begin as soon as possible.  This is a Regular, 7.5 hour/day position and is budgeted for 192 days per school year, beginning with the 2025/26 school year.

Job Purpose Statement: 

The May Street Elementary Behavior Support Paraprofessional will support our Learning Specialists and Instructional Assistants with small groups. Provide adult support to various students throughout the school day. Offer training and guidance to special education instructional assistants in the areas of best practice, behavior interventions, student and classroom strategies. Lead professional development for general education staff in the areas of behavior management strategies. Monitor and observe student behavior according to approved policies and procedures. Record and analyze student behavior data. Develop strong and effective rapport and interact effectively with students.  Handle emotionally charged situations with flexibility and calm.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Essential duties of this position include the following

  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvements and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assesses and records student achievement for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, and goals.
  • Assists teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.

  • Maintains regular and appropriate attendance and is on time for assignment(s) for the purpose of meeting the needs of the students and the district.
  • Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.
  • Follow all district policies, work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority.
  • Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague or district patron.
  • Develop job skills necessary to meet changes in the position.
  • Meet applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position. 

Job Requirements – Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance. 
  • Skills and training in CPI or certified to be a CPI trainer or willing to become a certified CPI trainer
  • Familiar with restorative justice practices
  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods and state curriculum framework.  
  • Knowledge of principles of child development and instructional processes.  
  • Knowledge of safe practices in classroom and playground activities and health regulations
  • Knowledge of basic subjects taught in district schools including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading, including punctuation and vocabulary and ability to assist with instructional and related activities in a learning environment 
  • Knowledge of, and ability to implement, de-escalation and behavior management techniques 
  • Knowledge of intensive behavior intervention techniques
  • Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices, especially as they relate to students with learning disabilities, development delays and autistic behavior
  • Perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks.
  • Ability to use computer technology - especially Google Suite and Gmail.  
  • Ability to accurately maintain records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and other school personnel.
  • Meet schedule and deadlines. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Experience: Prior experience supporting and working with students in an inclusive setting trauma informed care and behavior support.

 

EducationMinimum of an Associates’ Degree in subject related to the position or 72 college credits transferable to a four year college degree program; in lieu of the degree or credit requirement, can provide a passing score on the CBEST or the PRAXIS Paraprofessional Assessment exam.  A Bachelors Degree is preferred.

   

Required testing:  Any offer of employment made by Hood River County School District to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory results of:

The hourly pay range for this position for the 2025/26 school year will be $18.24 to $21.24/hour.  Hood River County School District provides a comprehensive benefits package, and includes district-paid contributions to a retirement account.   

 

Classified employees who pass the District's English/Spanish bilingual test will earn an additional 5% hourly increase.
