General Summary



The hiring amount for this position is $22.00 an hour. This is a non-exempt, temporary, variable-hour position, and is not eligible for City benefits.

The Coach II performs routine support and paraprofessional work involving a variety of duties related to the oversight and administration of the Aquatics Programs, specifically City Swordfish Swim Team and Preparatory programs. Does related work as required. Routine support includes but no limited to instruction of swim form and technique in and out of the water for competitive swimmers of various levels and ages groups. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under direct supervision, within one functional area, and of a routine nature.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assists with the planning and implementation of programs, classes, events, and activities which may include the following duties:
    • Distribute, collect inspect, and account for equipment,
    • Demonstrate proper use of equipment, observe and correct technique,
    • Set up and break down rooms/areas or activities.
  • Supervises Coach I and volunteers;
  • Maintains order and discipline by enforcing rules, regulations, and safety precautions;
  • May perform cleaning and general maintenance tasks;
  • Assists in demonstrating instruction techniques, observes athletes to detect and correct mistakes in technique;
  • Assists with or provides oversight and direction of program, event, or center participants. May keep time and/or score for competitive events/activities;
  • Leads or supervises programs, classes, events, fitness areas, activities, or center when a direct supervisor is not present;
  • Performs clerical duties such as administrative tasks, complete enrollment forms, track attendance, and may use a variety of computer software programs;
  • Performs customer service duties such as greet guests and answers questions in person and over the phone, explains Parks and Recreation programs and activities and conduct center tours;
  • Flexible work schedule with early morning, evenings, weekend, and holiday work required;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Minimum of a 10th grade education is required. 
  • Minimum of 2 seasons coaching/instructing a swim program and competitive swimmers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Special Requirements: 
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by start date and hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. 
  • Safety Training for Swim Coaches with First Aide and CPR/AED certification within one month of hire. 
  • May require OSHA and Blood Borne Pathogens. 
  • Position may require driving a City-owned vehicle and subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures.

Skills: Thorough knowledge of swim competition rules and procedures; thorough knowledge of professional behavior in a recreation environment; ability to independently maintain order among participants; to instruct participants; to deal courteously with the public. May require ability to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy and general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment. Ability to learn HY-TEK Team & Meet Manager software.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Work environment includes both indoor and outdoor aquatics environments which may include extreme heat or cold.  Work involves physical contact with others.  May be required to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance. Position may require driving a City-owned vehicle and is subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures.
