Job purpose:
The Exceptional Student Services Paraprofessional will implement general curriculum instruction for a classroom of students, at the direction of a certified teacher. The ESS Paraprofessional will support the management of IEP-driven supports and services for a classroom of students, while establishing a positive learning environment and promoting maximum student independence in all assigned tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports the implementation of specially designed general curriculum content in reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies, at the direction of a certified teacher.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents to support student progress.
- Completes special education documentation and classroom record-keeping according to DPS local procedures.
- Pursues professional learning opportunities to build professional expertise.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding students with disabilities.
- Helps with students' personal hygiene needs, including changing and managing braces or other supportive devices.
- Assists with positioning students in and out of adaptive equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, standers) under the guidance of a physical therapist.
- Support the student with safe transitions in and out of their wheelchair.
- Follow the student’s scheduled bathroom breaks and adhere to all bathroom and diaper-changing procedures.
- Perform daily stretching routines as outlined in the student’s plan.
- Follow daily stander training protocols, including lifting, positioning, monitoring, and documenting time in the stander.
- Supports students during meals by cutting food, opening containers.
- Facilitates safe, appropriate participation at recess with peers and playground equipment.
- Assists the school nurse in providing breathing treatments or other health-related tasks as directed.
- Assist the teacher, classroom staff, and students during all instructional and classroom activities.
- Provide motivation, positive reinforcement, and redirection to help the student complete assigned tasks.
- Assist with dismissal procedures, including waiting with the student in the lobby and helping load them onto the bus.
- Strong technical and computer skills are preferred
Qualifications:
Associates degree or higher; or at least sixty (60) semester credit hours from an accredited institution of higher education; official transcript required to validate education; ability to effectively attend to the needs of middle school aged students/small groups in the classroom under the direction of a classroom teacher and school administration.
