Description

Honoka'a Elementary School is seeking a passionate and dedicated Special Education Teacher to provide high-quality instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade. The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborating with general education teachers and support staff, and fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of special education best practices, excellent communication and collaboration skills, and a commitment to the success of every student.   

Examples of Duties

Responsibilities: IEP Development and Implementation: Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with parents/guardians, general education teachers, related service providers, and students (as appropriate). Conduct comprehensive evaluations to determine students' eligibility for special education services and identify their unique learning needs. Establish measurable annual goals and short-term objectives aligned with students' present levels of performance and state standards. Select and implement appropriate instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications to ensure student access to the general education curriculum. Maintain accurate and up-to-date IEP documentation and progress monitoring data. Instruction and Support: Provide direct and indirect instruction to students with disabilities in various settings (e.g., individual, small group, co-teaching). Adapt and modify curriculum materials and teaching methods to meet individual student needs and learning styles. Utilize evidence-based practices and research-supported interventions to promote student academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth. Implement positive behavior support strategies and develop behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as needed. Monitor student progress regularly and make data-driven instructional decisions. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate effectively with general education teachers to plan and implement inclusive instructional practices and ensure seamless integration of students with disabilities. Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress, IEP goals, and school-related matters. Work collaboratively with related service providers (e.g., speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, counselors) to provide comprehensive support to students. Participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and other school-based meetings as required. Communicate effectively with school administrators and other staff members. Classroom Management and Environment: Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment that respects individual differences and promotes student engagement. Implement effective classroom management strategies to support student behavior and create a conducive learning atmosphere. Organize and manage instructional materials and resources effectively. Professional Development and Compliance: Stay current with special education laws, regulations, and best practices through ongoing professional development. Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations related to special education. Participate in school-wide professional development opportunities and contribute to the school's continuous improvement efforts. Maintain confidentiality of student information. Other Duties: Supervise paraprofessionals and provide guidance as needed. Assist with school-wide activities and events. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: Valid Special Education license from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.

Desired Experience: Special education classroom experience in a K-12 school setting.

Desired Knowledge: Plan and facilitate Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings; exercise independent and professional judgment in carrying out daily functions; maintain an effective work pace under pressure to meet deadlines; grasp new concepts quickly and apply them effectively; work effectively with others.

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Payday

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
