Essential Functions

  • The primary purpose of this position is to take applications for benefits such as Food and Nutrition, Medicaid, Special Assistance, Work First, and Energy Assistance programs.  The position will also assure continuing compliance with individual program requirements. The caseworker must be able to interpret regulations with prudent judgement and logic, without personal bias.

  • The lead worker assists the supervisor in internal quality control in review of case records for consistency, accuracy, and completeness, checking to assure that proper work methods, policies and time standards are followed.

  • The lead worker also assists the supervisor in the initial training of employees and in the ongoing training process by being readily available each day as a resource to the caseworkers in the unit.

  • The lead worker participates in workshops and on-the-job training.  Unit staff meetings are held monthly.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge 

  • Adult and Family & Children’s Medicaid programs, Work First program, Special Assistance, Energy Assistance and Food & Nutrition programs. 

  •  Agency and community programs/services which could affect the client. 

  • NCFAST program and other state systems. 

Skill

  • Good computation and mathematical skills. 

Ability

  • Read, analyze, and interpret a variety of regulations, policies, and procedures of varying complexity. 

  • Understand the needs and problems of clients. 

  • Perform caseworker functions within allotted time frames.


Education and Experience

Required Minimum Training:

Graduation from an accredited associate degree program in Human Services Technology, Social Services Associate, Paralegal Technology, Business administration, Secretarial Science or closely related curriculum; or graduation from high school and two years paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience which included negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering and compiling of data, analysis of data and/or performance of mathematical or legal tasks with at least one year of such experience being in an income maintenance program; or graduation from high school and three years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Training/Experience:

Two years of work experience as an IM caseworker or an equivalent of training and experience.
