Position

Join our team at Renton Technical College! We are seeking a part-time Library Paraprofessional to support our Library team. This position will be responsible for performing a variety of library functions, primarily assisting patrons at the main circulation/information desk and performing routine clerical tasks in support of library operations.

This is a part-time, classified position reporting directly to the Dean of Instructional Support. It is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) Union at RTC. Work hours for this position are Thursdays, 2:00pm – 7:00pm, and Fridays and Saturdays, 10:00 am – 3:00pm. The salary range for this role is $21.39 - $25.03 hourly, and salary placement is based on applicable work experience. Additional information regarding the salary schedule can be found in the Collective Bargaining AgreementThe priority consideration date for applicants is October 24, 2025.

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions Include

  • Support efforts to improve access and successful educational outcomes for student populations through inclusive service and resource guidance.
  • Assist patrons at the circulation desk, including checking in/out of library materials, printing assistance, handling money, and answering the phone. 
  • Assist patrons with basic reference questions and perform basic reference searches using both print and online reference resources. 
  • Answer all library informational and directional questions, including questions regarding information contained in the catalog system and referring clients to appropriate employees for other services.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures in the library.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, language, gender, age, socio-economic status, physical and learning abilities, and a demonstrated commitment to an inclusive and equitable working and learning environment.
  • High school graduate or equivalent and one year of applicable library technical experience. One year of college education or training in library technical services may substitute on a month-for-month basis for required experience.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining confidentiality and exercising independent judgment. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a diverse clientele of faculty, students, staff, library team, and community patrons.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Basic understanding of library terminology, systems, and processes.
  • Ability to file materials numerically and alphabetically using the Dewey Decimal System.
  • General understanding of a library management system such as Alma/Primo and WorldCat.
  • Knowledge and skills working with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote universal design and accessibility. Proficiency in (or ability to learn within six months of hire) the production of accessible content, whether print or electronic. 
  • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.
  • Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese). 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office environment which is adequately heated and ventilated. Duties primarily involve active movements, frequent use of computer, and exposure to terminal screens in performing work assignments required. Work hours for this position are Thursdays, 2:00pm – 7:00pm, Fridays and Saturdays, 10:00 am – 3:00pm. This is an in-person position.
