QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma, an Associate’s degree, or 48 college semester hours, or 72 college quarter hours, or pass the ETS paraprofessional test.
Possess an Ohio State Board of Education Educational Aide License.
Training and/or experience which evidences basic knowledge of email and computer applications.
Demonstrates a sincere desire to aid all students and work in cooperation with the lead classroom teachers/Intervention Specialists.
Must have a phone for communication purposes.
Current driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Must pass a criminal background check.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under immediate supervision of the classroom teacher, work with handicapped/typical students in a one-on-one situation or small group situation providing instruction for personal care and/or the use of instructional aids; assists in the preparation of activities and projects; monitors student activities; uses positive guidance techniques; participates in evaluation team meetings when requested.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Comprehension of Google Suite applications.
Ensures the safety of students.
Assists students as instructed by classroom teacher(s) in one-on-one small group situations using the approved curriculum.
Assists the classroom teacher(s) with activities and projects (e.g., laminating, copying materials, bulletin boards, project preparation, and clean up, etc.).
Operates equipment (e.g., copier, computer, laminator, etc.).
Supervises students during recess/playground, halls, cafeteria periods (breakfast, lunch) and may feed students; walks or assists students to and from restrooms, buses, and cabs; and with duties related to the general welfare of students (e.g., safety precautions, self-help needs, etc.).
Climbs ladders to hang projects and store materials.
Participates, cooperates, and helps supervise emergency preparedness drills (e.g., tornado, fire, etc.).
Accompanies student(s) on class field trips or community experiences.
Prepares for and assists with classroom parties, snack-time, etc.
Uses positive guidance techniques to foster the development of self-control, self-esteem, positive social interactions as well as increased behavioral and academic independence.
Assists students with handicap devices and equipment.
Participates in team evaluation meetings, as requested.
Attends to personal needs of students as required (e.g., soiled clothing, toileting tasks, cuts, scrapes, illness, injuries, etc.).
Under the direction of school administration and observed by a certified staff member, assists students with taking medication.
May administer first aid and/or other medical needs of the student.
Carries out established behavioral plans and maintains a daily written communication log concerning the students.
Demonstrates professionalism, exhibits professional attire, and models appropriate behavior.
Clean and disinfect the work area and equipment as required.
Attend and participate in parent conferences when required.
Attends CPR, first aid, communicable disease, child abuse awareness, behavior modification, conflict resolution, CPI training and other ODE required training.
Stays current with Positive Behavior Interventions as well as Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification and performs physical holds and restraints as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor/teacher.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
May be asked to appear in court or to serve on an absence or Crisis Intervention Team.
Attends appropriate workshops and seminars, when requested by the supervisor.
Maintains required certificate(s) and/or license(s).
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
Travels to meetings and work assignments when requested by the supervisor.
Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
Occasional interaction with unruly people.
Occasionally lift, pull, push, carry various items up to a max of 100 pounds (on wheels) (i.e., paper boxes, supply delivery, equipment, etc.).
Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop.
Performs all duties in conformity to the adopted Vision and Mission statements.
Safeguards confidentiality of privileged information.
Fully understands and abides by the Ohio Revised Codes regulations for reporting child abuse and/or neglect.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: Board policies and procedures; building policies and procedures; student discipline code; attendance reporting procedures; teaching methods and techniques; teaching materials, supplies, and aids; staff and student relations; evaluation team procedures; handicap student devices and equipment; positive guidance techniques; delegated nursing duties.
Skill in: use of computer; handicap devices and equipment.
Ability to: interpret policies, rules, and regulations; communicate effectively; supervise students; instruct one-on-one or small groups; operate handicap devices and equipment; follow behavior plans; lift and move up to one hundred (100) pounds; maintain optimal energy, maintain enthusiasm and to be able to develop effective working relationships.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Assistive technology devices as well as ESC provided equipment (e.g. printer, copier, scanner, laminator, calculator, fax machine, postage meter, phone system, wheelchairs, lifts, audiovisual equipment, etc.).
