TITLE: PARAPROFESSIONAL (EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION)
10 months ( 180 days)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma required; Associates Degree preferred
- Knowledge of childhood growth and development
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques
- Personal characteristics necessary for working with students, staff members, teachers, administrators, parents, and the general public
- Demonstrated respect and protection of the confidentiality of students, staff, and families
- Ability to provide individual instructional services to students under supervision
- Demonstrated ability to read and write English and use proper verbal and written language skills
- Ability to operate computers and visual equipment, office related equipment and assistive technology devices for students
REPORTS TO: Assigned SPED teacher; Building level Administrator; and/or Director of Special Education
SUPERVISES: Students
JOB GOAL: The Paraprofessional will assist the teacher both inside and outside of the classroom in the delivery of specialized instruction and related services and supervision of students with disabilities.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work under the supervision of a licensed Special Education teacher to assist in providing instruction and other services to children.
- Assist the Special Education teacher in organizing, planning and implementing educational activities per teacher’s lesson plans and recording progress data.
- Assist teacher(s) in carrying out behavioral intervention program and collecting data.
- Contribute to a positive learning environment.
- Assist with toiletry and hygiene procedures for students, as needed.
- Responsible for supervision of students when the teacher is out of the classroom.
- Responsible for special education students getting to their bus or other transportation.
- Comply with applicable rules and regulations in the performance of their duties.
- Maintain appropriate records and files.
- Reflect appropriate appearance, personality, and self control.
- Strive to maintain and improve professional competence, participate in staff development opportunities provided by the school division.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Operate computer, audiovisual, and office-related equipment.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned or required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 month contract, Paraprofessional Salary Scale as approved by the School Board. Training in child abuse recognition and intervention required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Involves physical tasks including occasional restraint and ability to lift at least 50 pounds. Individual should be comfortable working with various positioning equipment (wheelchair, gait trainer, etc.) to support needs of individual students. Job duties may involve operation of equipment such as computer, copier, etc.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the School Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
