QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent, PLUS two years of college coursework (48 units), OR Associate Degree (or higher), OR pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills in assisting in instruction (Parapro, WorkKeys, OGET).

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Paraprofessional will work alongside the special education teacher in the instruction of exceptional children. He/she not only frees the teacher from the more routine tasks of the classroom, but also serves as an effective part of the educational team. With various responsibilities, he/she carries out the programs developed by the special education professionals. The paraprofessional works with a specified teacher and is assigned to a particular classroom. The role of the paraprofessional is to provide support to the multi handicapped certified special education teacher in the delivery of services to multi handicapped and deaf-blind children. The direction provided to paraprofessionals by certified personnel is the foundation of a successful program, which utilizes the paraprofessional program option.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts activities which reinforce IEP objectives.
  • Assists in student management and required instructional and non-instructional duties.  
  • Takes directives from the certified teacher on required IEP objectives including the procurement and documentation of evaluative data, appropriate management techniques to be utilized with each handicapped student in both instructional and non-instructional settings, and non-instructional activities to be performed such as classroom maintenance, student supervision, and clerical duties. 
  • Works with or supervises students in the classroom, playground, hall, restroom, therapy area, gymnasium, other specified areas on a school campus, community-based activities, and transportation situations; may conduct this supervision without the certified teacher being present.
  • When supervising students with the certified teacher being present, the paraprofessional should have designated certified personnel to report to for directions and consultation. 
  • Serves as an aide to transport special education students.
  • Assists special education students with adaptive equipment, wheelchairs, braces, and lifts.
  • Assists with special education students with special/emotional needs.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent or her/his designee.
