POSITION OVERVIEW Under direction of the Building Principal, the Multilingual Learner Paraprofessional assists the classroom teacher(s)by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being. Works individually and in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance, and support learning. This position also performs a variety of instructional and classroom management supports, as well as related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in all classrooms or learning environments.

TRAINING Appoquinimink School District may require you to be trained in Safety-Care or a similar competency-based crisis prevention intervention training program as a condition of your continued employment.
Adapting classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives
Assisting teachers for the purpose of determining students' needs and conveying information to
appropriate instructional personnel and parents
Implementing under the supervision of the teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
Supporting content teachers during days when the EL teacher is providing instruction in other buildings
Assisting classroom teacher with presenting small group instruction to include the ELs actively
Ensuring ELs are engaged in assignments meaningfully
Modeling language and immersing student in a language enriched environment
Providing extra skills practice whenever necessary
Breaking down activities into smaller, more comprehensible units for students who need extra explanation
Providing background knowledge needed to understand grade level curriculum through use of appropriately leveled reading materials, videos, pictures etc.
Helping to develop vocabulary and other prerequisite skills not addressed in the current grade level’s curriculum
Helping individual students feel more comfortable and involved in the classroom environment
Fostering cultural awareness in the classroom
Continuing EL supports during ACCESS Testing time when EL teacher is administering the test to the students in the district
Ensuring proper use of supports and accommodations in the classroom on classroom assessments and activities
Encouraging participation of ELs by acting as a sounding board when student is apprehensive to verbally communicate due to lack of confidence and language
Providing alternative checks for understanding using level appropriate methods
Helping the ELs in the classroom to navigate applications and software, glossaries and bilingual dictionaries
Keeping instructional portfolio materials for assessment and progress updates
Reviewing and reinforcing concepts taught to the class as a whole
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Below are the qualifications for this position:
High School diploma and passing ParaPro scores or a minimum of 60 college credits.
State of Delaware Paraeducator Permit required.
Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, students, administrators, and parents.
Experience in working with students of varying abilities
Excellent communication, organization, and computer skills.
Knowledge of IDEA, 504 and IEP’s.
Criminal background check and Tuberculin testing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position: This position may require frequent bending, walking, running, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds may be required. Additional demands may require moving wheelchairs, assisting with toileting, feeding and other daily living activities. Assist with self-care plans such as toileting, feeding, personal hygiene, dressing and other daily living activities; physically assist students to engage in activities such as walking or eating, able to kneel and work on the floor with students, able to walk for long periods. Assistance with physically aggressive behaviors required.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
Anyone offered employment is required to provide the following: proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
