OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES The Scholar Zone Specialist is responsible for supporting Nova Classical’s students in our Scholar Zone Program with dedication, enthusiasm, adaptability, kindness, passion, and energy. Much of the work of our Scholar Zone Specialists consists of student supervision and behavior management in large and small group settings, while overseeing activities, providing care, and helping students engage in activities in a positive and supportive environment. The Scholar Zone Specialist is employed at will and operates as a professional within the guidelines established by Nova Classical Academy. In cooperation with Nova Classical staff and volunteers, the Scholar Zone Specialist works to fulfill the program’s mission in the following areas of responsibility:
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Supervise and care for students during activities, ensuring safety and participation
Use strong communication skills to encourage and guide students during individual and group activities
Foster a positive, engaging atmosphere where students can have fun and develop good social skills
Assist with organizing and administering recreational and creative activities
Support the health and social-emotional wellbeing of students through appropriate care and engagement
Provide supervision of students in one-on-one, small group, and/or large group settings large group settings during regularly scheduled before and after-care programming, S.O.S. days, and other programming as assigned
Adherence to Nova Classical policies, procedures, and the principles of classical education
Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Successful completion of the Background Study as required by the Department of Human Services (DHS) no later than the start date of employment
First Aid/CPR/AED training and/or certification(s) and/or willingness to obtain
Ability to work with and understanding of child development and behavior
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and other information (e.g. health) as required by FERPA, MDH, etc…
Committed to professional and technical development through attendance at development activities, scheduled meetings, and relevant and/or required training
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
High School diploma or equivalent education
Associate’s or other degree or equivalent education/experience in childcare or education-related program
Experience as an Education Assistant, Paraprofessional, or Para Educator
Experience in childcare, babysitting, or in a volunteering role with K-6 aged children
Familiarity with K-12 students in one-on-one, small group, and/or classroom setting
Current or previous experience working in a classical education environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties are generally performed in a classroom and/or resource room setting, indoors and/or outdoors, where some environmental hazards and/or risks may be present
Frequent lifting up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects in the performance of the job
Must be able to remain in a stationary position and/or walk for periods of one hour or more
Exposure to various disagreeable conditions which may involve, but are not limited to, human/student contact, verbal outbursts, physical aggression, exposure to bodily fluids
Occasional or frequent standing for periods of one (1) hour or more
Frequent work outdoors in all weather conditions
Must be able to exchange accurate information with students, teachers, parents, and staff
Regular operation of computer or other office machines
JOB SUMMARY The primary role of Scholar Zone Specialist is to enhance the learning environment for students for Nova Classical’s Scholar Zone Program (Grades K-6) by providing effective, personalized attention; engaging in appropriate supervision and behavioral support; and, modeling intellectual and principled living by demonstrating character and intellectual virtues in accordance with Nova Classical Academy’s classical education tradition.
WORK SCHEDULE SCHOOL YEAR HOURS On School Days: 6:45 – 8:30 AM and/or 3:15 – 6:15 PM On School-Out-of-Session (S.O.S.) Days: 7:15 AM – 3:45 PM or 9:15 AM – 5:45 PM
SUMMER HOURS Monday-Friday: 7:15 AM – 3:45 PM or 9:15 AM – 5:45 PM
WAGE HIRING RANGE $17.95 - $19.61
