General Statement of Job

Performs intermediate paraprofessional work coordinating and presenting science programs to citizens and visitors of all ages. Work is performed under general supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Presents science programs, including demonstrations and tours emphasizing science concepts pertaining to the exhibits at the Children's Science Explorium and Science Playground. 
  • Interacts with visitors to help them explore and learn from exhibits.
  • Provides general oversight of exhibit hall, including record keeping and routine exhibit maintenance.
  • Prepares facilities and equipment for programs, including cleaning and storage.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Scientific concepts and principles. 
Skilled in:
  • Public speaking and presentation skills, especially for diverse age groups.
  • Setting up and maintaining science exhibits and program materials.
  • Keeping accurate records and completing routine administrative tasks.
Ability to:
  • Present demonstrations and programs in an exciting and entertaining manner. 
  • Understand audiences and adapt presentations accordingly.
  • Operate video and audio equipment and computer.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and professional manner. 

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, plus course work in the area of physical science and/or other related educational experience.
  • Experience working with the public and/or working with children. 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Public speaking experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.

LOCATION:
Sugar Sand Park Community Center (Children's Explorium)

SCHEDULE:
Work schedule varies and will include weekdays, weekends and holidays as needed, as well as two (2) evenings a month for special events.
This is not a seasonal position.
20 - 25 hours per week.
