Needed for the 2026-2027 school year at Covington ISD in Covington, TX: A full-time, fully-certified Special Education (EC-12) teacher/Coordinator/ARD Facilitator. Must hold a valid Texas Teaching Certificate or be eligible for hire through an alternative certification program. This is for a contract position on a 10- month basis. Salaries are determined by means of a board adopted 31+ step pay scale with an additional special education stipend of $2,000. Covington is located 45 miles north of Waco on Highway 171 between Hillsboro and Cleburne. Job Description The following describes the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to these job openings and is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties that may be assigned or skills that may be required. Primary Purpose: Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned. Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree from accredited university Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs Effective communication skills Experience: One-year student teaching or approved internship Major Responsibilities and Duties: Special Education Coordinator / ARD Facilitator Coordinates the IEP process including scheduling and conducting ARD meetings and works cooperatively with administrators and instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities. 1.Gather data (grades, attendance, reports) prior to meetings in order to coordinate, draft, produce, collect, and analyze paperwork for special education meetings as well as attend special education meetings to facilitate implementation of special education student services ensuring students with disabilities receive appropriate services and individualized support within a school or district, while also collaborating with staff and families. 2.Guide ARD committees through effective communication, eliciting participation, and resolving conflicts to reach consensus on student services. 3.Participate in the IEP team to assist with interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students according to district procedures and ensure IEP paperwork is accurate, finalized, and turned in within required timelines and maintain compliance with federal/state timelines for referrals and evaluations. 4.Serve as the central point of contact for teachers, parents, and administrators regarding ARD decisions, IEP goals, and modifications. 5.Assist classroom teachers with implementation of IEP. 6.Train staff on compliance issues, and support special education teachers with standards-based IEP goals. 7.Coordinate a continuing evaluation of the student’s individual education programs and initiate changes based on findings. 8.Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required 9.Comply with district and local campus routines and regulations. Instructional Strategies 10.Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned. 11.Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required. 12.Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. 13.Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned 14.Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments. 15.Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis. 16.Participate in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional media. Student Growth and Development 17.Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing. 18.Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP. 19.Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal. 20.Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students. Classroom Management and Organization 21.Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. 22.Manage student behavior and administer discipline including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP. 23.Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP. 24.Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 25.Plan and assign the work of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion. Other 26.Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers. 27.Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues. 28.Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. 29.Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers. 30.Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required. 31.Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Supervisory Responsibilities: Direct the work of assigned special need aide(s). Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; [P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED)] Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting Motion: Frequent walking Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment; may work prolonged or irregular hours. Environment: Exposure to biological hazards. Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
