GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

 

The special education coordinator is responsible for assisting in the development, the implementation, and supervision of Special Education Programs for the public and non-public schools located in the district.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

 

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

 

  • Maintains compliance with federal and state special education regulations;
  • Assist principals and teachers to assure compliance with appropriate state and federal statutes and regulations governing special education services and procedures, including IDEA;
  • Oversee the appropriate referral, evaluation, identification, placement, and implementation of the IEP in the least restrictive environment for children with disabilities;
  • Serves as a liaison between the home and school with students, parents, and school personnel;
  • Assist in the facilitation of appropriate in-service activities for staff and parents;
  • Work with students, parents and staff in developing an understanding of the needs of children with disabilities;
  • Represent and interpret the Special Education program to professional staff, parents, and the general public;

 

  • Be responsible for informing teachers of changes in regulations and guidelines;
  • Attend meetings as designated by the Supervisor of Special Education;
  • Attend multidisciplinary team and IEP meetings concerning students, as needed to assist in the development of appropriate plans for students who are eligible for special education;
  • Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect student information, equipment, and materials

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as to be able to work effectively with teachers, principals, and district administrators. Candidate must possess knowledge of Special Education procedures and policies. Candidate must have organizational skills in collecting and organizing data.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred in Special Education or related field. Candidate must have a minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience in Special Education.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Must possess demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, and parents.

 

Candidate must be able to develop, implement and evaluate processes and procedures for screening, identifying, placement, programming and follow- up for individual disabled children.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

 

Duties performed will be in the various schools in small offices, conference rooms and classrooms. Participant will frequently operate a vehicle for transportation from school to school and to the central office. Frequent walking, standing stooping and lifting will be involved in the position.

Sitting for extended periods of time may be required. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and office equipment is needed. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken work levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
