Job Description
The Public Schools of Brookline seeks a caring, compassionate, and dependable paraprofessional to join our early elementary team. The successful candidate will work closely with the classroom teacher and/or special educator to provide instructional support and encouragement to students individually and in small groups. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide supervision and support to students throughout the school day including passing periods, lunch, recess, etc
- Maintain a safe environment on the playground, observing students and scaffolding playground skills
- Support students’ ability to follow the classroom routine and assist with student engagement during large and small group instruction
- Provide positive and supportive learning experience for the students; and set and maintain consistent and constructive limits
- Provide instructional services under the direction of teachers and special educators, providing one on one or small group instruction
- Support young children’s social problem solving skills and behavior regulation throughout the school day
- Thorough knowledge and competent implementation of student educational programs, behavior management guidelines, and individual health plans
- Work with teachers and specialists to learn instructional/educational strategies as well as discuss student program and needs
- Support in the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans, classroom management systems, and reinforcement systems
- Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information
- Actively participating in professional development opportunities, department meetings, and school-wide initiatives to continuously improve teaching practices and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous learning
- Performing other duties as directed by school leadership
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Work is typically performed indoors in the school facility and offsite at field trips
- Moderate physical movement is required for the job
- The noise level in this work environment varies from quiet to very loud
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continually required to stand, walk, sit, run, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, balance, crouch, talk, hear, smell and see
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds
Required Qualifications
- Commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Ability to modify instructions and provide prompts or redirection as needed.
- Ability to work with students with disabilities
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and establish positive relationships with students and colleagues
- Reflective practitioner with a growth mindset and a willingness to adapt to the evolving needs of students and the school community
- Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with young children in a classroom or educational setting
- Completion of first aid and CPR training
Reports To
The Special Education Paraprofessional will report to the school building principal.
