     SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
     
    The Wilkinsburg School District is a small, urban public school district serving approximately 400 students. The district operates two elementary schools, offering education from Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Through an educational partnership, students in grades 7–12 attend Pittsburgh Public Schools, gaining access to expanded academic programs, extracurricular activities, and support services. The Wilkinsburg School District is dedicated to advancing academic excellence and promoting the social and emotional well-being of all its students.
     
    The position of Special Education Paraprofessional is a 10-month position in the district and an integral part of the building’s administration (educational support) team whose primary responsibility is to work with teachers to provide additional educational support to either small groups or individual students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
     
    The teaching assistant is a member of the Wilkinsburg Education Support Professional Association, ESPA-PSEA-NEA, and is subject to the conditions of employment as outlined in the most recent union agreement.  The special education paraprofessional reports directly to the building principal and works closely with teachers, students, and parent/guardians in (of) the district.                                        

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     
    1. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by teacher.
    2. Assists the teacher in devising (designing) special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities. (Assists the teacher in designing special materials to reinforce skills, based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities) 3. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
    3. Unpacks, records, and distributes various supplies.
    4. Helps student’s master (use of) equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.
    5. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
    6. Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up (designed) as assigned by the teacher.
    7. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips and escorts students to other (between) classes.
    8. Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
    9. Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
    10. Alerts the regular teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student.
    11. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information on or about students as is expected of fully licensed teacher.
    12. Other duties as requested by immediate supervisor.
     QUALIFICATIONS
    Associates degree required. 
    At least 3 years of experience working with children preferred. 
    Demonstrated communication (written and verbal), organizational and technical skills (computer skills).
    Ability to obtain Act 33/34 Clearances, Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprint Clearance

    RATE OF PAY/BENEFITS

    The Special Education Paraprofessional pay rate for the 2025/2026 School Year is $24.43/hour.
     
    Health Benefits – Individual health insurance is offered through Highmark BC/BS, Dental and Vision after 60 business days of employment and family health benefits are offered after 6 months of employment.
