Special Education Teacher Assistant
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under direct supervision the teacher assistant provides general teaching support to the assigned teacher. Reports directly to the Principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Conducts such duties to support instruction as preparing copies, preparing mailings, light typing and data entry, etc.
- May use computers in performing assigned tasks
- Duties may be specialized to area of instruction, type of students, etc.
- Provides classroom teaching assistance such as reinforcing skills, completing roll call and student counts; administering make-up work, etc.
- Assists teachers with academic instruction and classroom activities; prepares and disseminates materials for classroom activities
- Sets up classroom for special activities as assigned such as preparing materials for classroom, setting up charts, etc.
- Provides physical assistance to students including but not limited to toileting, self-help, transfer and/or lifting for purposes of mobility associated with school activities
- Arranges for field trips (permission slips, arrangement of transportation, etc.), speakers/presenters, and related educational activities; accompanies class on field trips as required
- Provides clerical support by performing such duties as light typing and data entry, routine sorting and filing, and routine posting to ledgers
- Types, completes and/or files various records and forms
- Collects incoming monies for field trips, school pictures, and other school fees; prepares receipts for monies collected
- Performs miscellaneous duties as required such as distributing materials, scheduling parent or teacher appointments, ordering supplies, scheduling tutoring, escorting students to other areas of the school, etc.

- Assists the administrative team in providing an atmosphere conducive to learning and teaching
- Is punctual and maintains regular attendance
- Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies
- Recognizes and follows the appropriate procedures in the "chain of command" as designated by board policies and/or administrative procedures
- Presents a positive image of GCA at all times
- Operates a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, two-way radio, telephone, calculator, etc.
- Willingly performs other related duties as assigned by the classroom teacher and/or Principal

Days of Employment per School Year
- 180 days of employment per school year
Education and Experience
- Preferred completion of two years (60 semester hours) college coursework from an accredited institution and/or minimum 3 years classroom experience working with young children in a public school setting
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position
- Knowledge in the methods for developing lesson plans and materials, and classroom activities that stimulate learning
- Knowledge of the records, forms, and reports that must be prepared and maintained
- Knowledge of proper maintenance of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities
- Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and adjustment problems
- Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities
Skills/Effort:
- Ability to provide instruction to students through explanation, demonstration, and/or supervised practice
- Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations
- Ability to prepare lesson plans, assessments, and instructional materials for classroom activities
- Ability to identify student adjustments and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action to parents
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents, all staff members, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job
- Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities
Working Conditions
- Conducts duties in a classroom environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions
- Requires ability to work under a degree of stress-related duties that require constant attention and working with students
- Physical demands are restricted to classroom work requiring lifting/moving of items up to 50 pounds
- Occasional local travel is required; no overnight travel is required
- Job requires the operation of standard office equipment
