TITLE: Special Education Teacher – Learning Support (Elementary Grades 3-5)
REPORTS TO:
- Building Principals regarding day-to-day job responsibilities
- Director of Student Support Services regarding all special education issues (paperwork, curriculum, procedures, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate
- Special Education Certification PK - 12, PK-8, or N-12 required and Elementary K-6, PK-4, or Grades 4-8 Mid Level Certification preferred.
- 3.0 or higher QPA
- Proof of ongoing professional or educational experience
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Computer literacy
- Experience in Reading Mastery/Corrective Reading preferred
- Experience in collecting Annual Progress Monitoring Data preferred
- Experience using goals or other special education data management software
- Experience in using software for all special education forms
- Experience working with diverse learners preferred

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaches the academic subject(s) to students in accordance to the student’s IEP’s, using the approved written curriculum and/or the special education alternative curriculum adopted by the South Fayette Township School District.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the need of each student in accordance with the student’s IEP.
- Writes and revises student’s IEP’s on an as needed basis but at least on an annual basis.
- Writes the reevaluation reports (RRs) for special education students.
- Writes/mails/IEP invitation letters and coordinates all IEP revision meetings with parents and appropriate staff.
- Writes all NOREPs.
- Attends all IEP meetings.
- Develops and implements behavior plans for students on an as needed basis and in accordance to the student’s IEP.
- Works with the MDT team and IEP team members to determine appropriate support services for students and works with team members to implement these services.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
- Communicates with parents regularly through conferences, phone calls, emails, progress report and other means to discuss student’s progress and interpret the school program.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Budget: selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with district testing program.
- Administers individual achievement tests to students on a regular basis to help monitor student progress.
- Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Maintains extended school year data collection.
- Maintains Annual Progress Monitoring data collection.
- May be asked to perform other job-related responsibilities as per the building principal and/or Director of Student Support Services.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the South Fayette
Township Board of Education and the South Fayette Education Association.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by, but not limited to, the Director of Student Support Services and communicated to the superintendent for review.
