Special Education Teacher (Letter of Appointment)

Location: 

General McLane High School

Certification: 

Valid Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate for Special Education K-12, PK-8, or PK-12  (required)

 

Job Selection Expectations: 

Applications, resumes, letters of reference, and written samples will be reviewed for required certification; demonstrated related knowledge, skills, and abilities; and ability to communicate effectively.  As candidates progress through the selection process, they may be asked to perform additional written exercises, complete panel interviews, and perform a sample lesson related to the subject area. 

Application Requirements:

Applicants are expected to possess a valid and appropriate certificate for the vacant position at the time of application as well as all necessary clearances. Additional qualifications and experience will be considered and may be necessary or desirable for individual positions along with a demonstrated competency in writing and communication skills. 

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations, including IDEA, Section 504, and ADA.
  • Familiarity with a range of disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities) and their impact on academic and social development.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) that align with students' needs and state standards.
  • Strong instructional skills, including the ability to differentiate instruction, modify curriculum, and use evidence-based interventions.
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Effective behavior management skills, including the use of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).
  • Collaboration skills to work closely with general education teachers, related service providers, parents/guardians, and support staff.
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity to diverse student backgrounds and learning needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for parent meetings, documentation, and team collaboration.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, including case management, compliance tasks, progress monitoring, and instructional duties.
  • Understanding of assistive technology and how to integrate it into learning environments.
  • Skill in fostering independence and self-advocacy in students with disabilities.
  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and supporting all students in achieving their fullest potential.
  • Knowledge of transition planning for postsecondary education, employment, and independent living.
  • Professionalism and ethical conduct, including confidentiality and ongoing commitment to professional growth.

Anticipated Duration:

Full-time Letter of Appointment (beginning in the 2025-2026 school year)
