The Special Education Teacher/Team Chairperson will serve as the designee of the Director of Special Education in a combination role of Team Chairperson for the department as well as serving as a Liaison and teaching or coteaching classes as needed. The appointee will assist with monitoring departmental compliance with Federal and State Special Education Regulations with regard to referrals, re-evaluations, Team meetings and the development/implementation of IEP’s. This position will require the teacher to provide curriculum planning, instruction, assessment, and progress reporting using Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks to students in grades 9-12 with a variety of mild to moderate disabilities. The position involves serving as Liaison for a caseload of students, which includes developing an IEP, conducting assessments, and communicating with vocational and academic teachers, other special education staff and related service providers, parents, students, and administrators. Reports directly to the Director of Special Education.
Responsibilities and Duties:
1.Coordination of the identification, referral and program planning for all special needs students.
2.Serve as Team Chairperson for as needed for Annual Reviews/Reevaluations.
3.Monitor staff compliance with time lines and procedures for developing IEP’s and Progress Reports.
4.Participate in transitional team meetings for new students and coordinate and prepare class recommendations and services.
5.Provide consultation to special Ed staff regarding IEP compliance.
6.Assist in chairing monthly department meetings to support students and department initiatives.
7.Provide consultation to regular Ed staff regarding accommodating the diverse learning styles of all students.
8.With the Director of Special Education, facilitate a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC).
9.Assist with the compilation of data and completion of required State and Federal reports.
10.Consult in planning and coordinating the special education budget and make recommendations to the Director of Student Services regarding program changes.
11.Plan and coordinate in-service training in conjunction with Director of Student Services required to meet student needs.
12.Function as a resource for principal, other administrators, and staff regarding special education policy, procedures, or state and federal regulations.
13.Teaching and maintaining curriculum making appropriate modifications/accommodations based on individual needs and learning styles.
14.Teaching effective self-advocacy, executive functioning, and compensatory strategies to students to increase independence and self-reliance.
15.Effective planning and assessment of curriculum and instruction to students enrolled in special education classes or inclusion classes.
16.Supporting effective self-advocacy, executive functioning, and compensatory strategies to students to increase independence and self-reliance.
17.Promotion of high standards and expectations for students’ achievement.
18.Engage in professional development programs to keep current with modern pedagogy.
19.Cooperate with department Team Leader in fulfilling the mission of the institution.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 1.Certification by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Moderate Disabilities or equivalent.
2.Masters’ degree in Moderate Disabilities or equivalent.
3.Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in public education, part of which must have been in teaching or supervising in the area of Special Education.
Compensation:
1. Based on credentials, approvals and experience, the successful candidate will be paid in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School Teacher’ Association and the Blackstone Valley Regional School District Committee.
