    Salary Range: HTEA Salary Guide ranging from $63,975.00 to $109,925 (prorated)

    JOB DESCRIPTION:
    SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     
    1. Holds valid New Jersey certificate as Teacher of the Handicapped/Teacher of Students with Disabilities and all other NJ certifications with appropriate endorsements.
    2. Demonstrates effective problem solving, communications, organization, planning, record keeping and human relations skills.
    3. Successfully completes required criminal history check and has proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
    4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
     
    REPORTS TO: Principal/Director of Special Services
    JOB GOAL:        Instructs assigned students in designated subject matter in accordance with the curriculum approve  by the Board of Education within the scope of the resources - including books, materials, equipment, schedule, space, and supervision provided by the school district.
    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Instructional Planning
    1. Maintain lesson plans under the Board approved model for teaching and learning;
    2. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that provide appropriate instructional strategies in order to adapt the instruction to the needs of each pupil.
    3. Set specific objectives in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and effectively instruct in a way to achieve these objectives.
    4. Plan class activities and lesson presentations that are age appropriate and meet the individual needs, interests, and ability levels of all students.
    5. Participate with other staff members in planning during designated times.
    6. Incorporate into planning, all requirements in a student’s IEP provided through the district’s child study team and as required in a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP)
    2. Instruction
    1. Directs the instructional and non-instructional activities of the paraprofessional assigned to the Special Education classroom.
    2. Provide quality instruction in accordance with Board approved curriculum as well as to meet the needs of the goals and objectives outlined in the student’s IEP;
    3. Utilize Board adopted curricula, textbooks, technology resources, and other appropriate learning activities to achieve state and district standards for students.
    4. Monitor pupil academic progress and personal growth toward appropriate objectives.
    5. Maintain records of pupil’s educational progress and summarizes these grades for reporting purposes.
    6. Identify pupil needs and provide appropriate, engaging instruction.
    7. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate that is conducive to learning.
    8. Utilize class time effectively, supervising pupils in assigned activities.
    9. Design assessments that inform ongoing instruction.
    10. Employ differentiated instruction techniques, as needed.
    11. Implement required accommodations, supplemental instruction, and services as required by pupils’ individualized education programs.
    12. Refer students to the appropriate support personnel using prescribed district procedures.
    13. Collect data needed to accurately complete progress monitoring on IEP goals & objectives.
     
    4. Professional Development
    1. Strives to maintain and enhance professional competence through professional reading as well as participation in workshops, conferences and appropriate staff development programs in accordance with district guidelines.
    5. School/Community Relations
    1. Strives to establish cooperative relations and to communicate with parents/guardians when necessary.
    2. Cooperates and shares professionally with members of the administration and other staff.
    3. Maintains confidentiality about students in accordance with state and federal law as well as district policy.
    4. Consults jointly with parents and Child Study Team personnel in a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
    5. Provides progress reports, on students assigned to the Special Education class to parents, classroom teachers, and the Director of Special Services in accordance with Board Policy and administrative regulations.
    6. Collaborates with classroom teachers on a regular basis regarding objectives established for each student, as well as the materials and instructional strategies being used to accomplish those objectives.
     

    6. Other Assigned Duties
    Performs all other tasks and assumes such other duties as designated by the building principal or Director of Special Services.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:    Ten-month year. Salary established in the Agreement between the Holmdel Township Board of Education and the Holmdel Township Education Association.
    EVALUATION: Performance of the position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Agreement between the Holmdel Township Board of Education and the Holmdel Township Education Association.
