Position Summary
Tiverton High School is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Special Education Teacher to support students with disabilities in accessing instruction within an inclusive high school environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in individualized instruction, collaboration, and compliance with state and federal special education regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Support
Deliver specialized instruction in both inclusion and/or pull-out settings based on student needs
Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of learners, including students with cognitive, academic, and social-emotional needs
Utilize evidence-based practices to support student growth and progress toward IEP goals
Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instruction accordingly
IEP Development & Compliance
Serve as case manager for assigned students, ensuring compliance with all Rhode Island Department of Education and IDEA regulations
Prepare and facilitate IEP meetings, including development of Present Levels, measurable goals, and service delivery models
Develop and implement transition plans for students ages 14-21, including age-appropriate transition assessments, measurable postsecondary goals (education/training, employment, and independent living when appropriate), and coordinated transition services aligned to student interests and strengths
Coordinate transition planning with families, school staff, and outside agencies (e.g., adult service providers, vocational rehabilitation) to support post-secondary outcomes
Complete all required documentation including progress reports and evaluation summaries in a timely and compliant manner
Collaborate with related service providers to ensure coordinated service delivery
Collaboration & Communication
Work collaboratively with general education teachers to support inclusive practices and co-teaching models
Communicate effectively with families, maintaining a partnership approach to student support
Participate in MTSS processes when necessary and contribute to data-driven problem solving
Coordinate with school counselors, administrators, and outside agencies as appropriate
Professional Responsibilities
Participate in professional development aligned with district initiatives
Maintain accurate records and use district systems (e.g., ASPEN) for documentation and reporting
