This position is responsible for assisting students with disabilities and their families in obtaining services necessary to transition from high school to a post-secondary setting.  Responsibilities include the oversight and management of the transition program and services including support to classroom teachers, job coaches, other staff, and administrators.  The transition specialist will assist with IDEA compliance and analysis of student performance and post-secondary planning data to support professional development and delivery of a high quality post-secondary education program.  This is a Grant Funded (Starnes) position that will be evaluated yearly.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Supports the oversight and coordination of transition services for students age 14 through 21 (inclusive) in SCPS special education programs.

  • Implements professional development for classroom teachers, job coaches, other staff, and administrators as needed.

  • Supports the coordination and expansion of community work sites and employment opportunities for students with disabilities.

  • Supports classroom teachers with the coordination of services through community agencies (DARS, PERT, Wilson Workforce, etc.) for students with disabilities.

  • Reviews IEPs for all students age 14-21 (inclusive) for compliance with State Performance Plan indicator 13 and provides feedback to teachers related to transition in the IEP.

 

  • Contacts yearly “completers/exiters” in accordance with indicator 14 requirements. 

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data to complete State Performance Plan indicators 13 and 14, providing reports on student outcomes and ensuring compliance. 

  • Works collaboratively with special education teachers, administrators, community agencies, and families to assist with career and transition opportunities for students with disabilities.  

  • Provides case management for special situation students. 

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of experience supporting students with disabilities in transition services preferred.

  • Prior experience managing IEP meetings, coaching teachers/staff, and curriculum development preferred.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Masters degree preferred. Administrative endorsement preferred.
 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Special Education

Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Teacher salary schedule, teacher contract plus 20 days (220 days)
