Position Description

Job Title: 1:1 Registered Nurse/Paraprofessional
Location: Assigned School Building
Supervisor: Pupil Personnel Services Director/School Principal
Department: School Department (District)

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The 1:1 Registered Nurse/Paraprofessional position combines nursing duties with instructional support responsibilities for an assigned student with complex medical needs. This individual will provide skilled medical care and assistance to a student as required, while also serving as a 1:1 paraprofessional for the student when no acute nursing care is needed.

Primary Nursing Responsibilities:
Administer prescribed medication per the physician's orders via oral, G-tube, injection, and/or nebulizer routes as required for the assigned student
Provide skilled nursing treatments such as catheterization, wound care, and diabetes management as outlined in the student's Plan of Care
Monitor students' chronic conditions (e.g., seizures, asthma, allergies) throughout the school day
Maintain accurate and compliant medical records per nursing standards
Respond to illness, injuries, and medical emergencies following the nursing process
Escort student to and from school on bus if/as needed

Primary Paraprofessional Responsibilities:
Assist special education and general education teachers in implementing IEP/lesson plans for assigned student
Provide individualized academic, behavioral, and self-care support for student in alignment with student’s IEP
Facilitate inclusion by supporting student's active participation in general education activities
Gather data and document progress towards IEP goals across multiple settings
Prepare adapted materials and assistive technology per student needs
Implement applied behavior analysis strategies and positive behavior supports
Supervise and facilitate peer interactions during classroom activities, meals, and recess

Qualifications:

Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program
Current Registered Nurse license in good standing in the State of Rhode Island
Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification (must be maintained)
Mandatory de-escalation and physical intervention training (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
Knowledge of federal/state laws and regulations for special education
Excellent written/verbal communication skills
Physical ability to perform essential functions, including lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling

Preferred:
Minimum 2 years of pediatric/school nursing experience
Experience working with students with disabilities
Experience providing educational support services through direct instruction or classroom assistance
Knowledge of IEP implementation and special education practices

Working Conditions:

Collaboration with multidisciplinary team, including educators, therapists, and medical professionals
School year position following the academic calendar

This split role allows an experienced Pediatric Registered Nurse to utilize their specialized clinical skills while also directly supporting the learning and inclusion of a student with disabilities and special medical needs in classroom settings.
