2026-2027 18+ Plus Special Education Teacher @ Elsik High School

Primary Purpose:

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop and implement individualized plans for specially designed instruction for students to develop competencies and skills to maximize opportunities, independent living, economic self-sufficiency and full participation in society.

Qualifications:                                                               

Education/Certification:

  • Texas certification standards required for assignment as set by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)
  • ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year
  • Meet NCLB Highly Qualified criteria as required by assignment

 

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge in Community Based Instruction and Community Based Vocational Instruction.
  • Current knowledge in transition planning, Indicators, and post-secondary readiness
  • Able to work with students with cognitive deficits and behavior challenges
  • Able to interact with diverse groups of professionals
  • Supportive of district/department initiatives and proficient in oral and written communication
  • Prior experience and skills in using Microsoft Suite, Google software/Apps, and district specific software

 

Experience:

  • Direct work experience with individuals with disabilities preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Management

  • Diagnose the learning needs of all students and seeks the assistance of building and district leadership for appropriate intervention methods, techniques and strategies.
  • Conduct job/task analysis of specific job skills using a specific job skill inventory.
  • Assist in the student-to-job matching through the correlation of skills, interests, abilities, and other characteristic essential for the job.
  • Assist in the pre-vocational training of students prior to employment; this includes in-classroom activities and community-based instruction.
  • Provide direct instruction to the students in the performance of job duties in the work environment during work hours.
  • Plan and supervise students to, during and from community-based instruction and work sites.
  • Monitor progress and intervene wherever necessary to help retraining or potential advancement.
  • Communicate and follow up with employer concerning student job performance/needs.
  • Collaborate with the district support teams to ensure effective practices and implementation of program critical components.
  • Plan and supervise assignment of paraprofessionals; including community-based instruction and work sites.
  • Collaborate with high school teachers/case managers to develop appropriate post-secondary plans.
  • Implement instructional, linguistic, and/or modifications and accommodations per Admission, Review, Dismissal ARD and/or LPAC decisions with students receiving services under all federal and state guidelines.
  • Confer with and foster professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators on a regular basis per building and district guidelines.
  • Implement an effective discipline management system for the classroom in alignment with building and district policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Plan and participate in all meetings and provide appropriate documentation for students regarding admissions, reviews, progress, grades, dismissals, conferences, etc.
  • Maintain an acceptable attendance rate – 94% annually (excluding approved leaves and emergencies).
  • Maintain competence through professional development activities to meet building, district and/or federal requirements.
  • Comply with state and federal laws, District policies, rules, regulation and administrative directives as they exist or may hereafter be amended.
  • Demonstrate and maintain competence in delivering PCS in accordance with IEP requirements.
  • Perform PCS tasks as specified in each student’s IEP.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation of all SHARS billable PCS activities.

 

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the AISD Board policy and Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS).

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district wide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors. This position includes work in community settings, such as restaurants, retail stores, hotel buildings, etc., and may include outdoor community settings.

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

Probationary contract – 187 days plus 4 days of Alief U professional development for a teacher new to the district  

2025-2026 Salary Schedule  

Minimum teacher salary is $66,500 (base $64,100 + $2,400 Teacher Retention Allotment (TRA) Stipend) 

Salary is based on 187 days. If working less than 187 days, the salary will be less.
