POSITION:  Early Childhood Special Education Teacher (ECSE)


LOCATION: Cougar Elementary School

SALARY: Teacher Scale - 200 Days

HOURS: 7.5 hours per day

POSITION LENGTH: 200 Days 

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR(S): Building Principals


JOB SUMMARY:

The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Teacher provides specialized instruction and related services to preschool-aged children in alignment with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The ECSE Teacher works collaboratively with general education staff, families, and related service providers to ensure that appropriate instructional strategies, accommodations, and supports are in place to meet the unique developmental and learning needs of students with disabilities, while promoting inclusive and meaningful learning experiences.


REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education, or eligibility to obtain one
  • Experience with instructional technology or willingness to participate in required technology training
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of diverse student populations.
  • Ability to build positive, effective relationships with students, families, and school staff


ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)

  • Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and school board policies.
  • Perform duties necessary to support the effective operation of the school and division.
  • Implement the preschool curriculum; develop individual instructional plans; and select instructional strategies and materials that are developmentally, culturally, and individually appropriate.
  • Collaborate with related service providers to design and implement strategies to meet students’ unique needs.
  • Partner with parents to support their child’s needs in daily home and community activities.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals, accommodations, and services.
  • Document school and home visits to meet program requirements.
  • Assess student progress toward IEP goals and provide feedback to families, staff, and administrators.
  • Deliver special education services in community preschool and daycare settings by collaborating with general education teachers to provide instructional and environmental adaptations.
  • Support general education teachers and families in managing student behavior to maintain safe, effective learning environments.
  • Conduct Child Find screenings, and observations to assess developmental levels and determine eligibility for services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records and reports as required by federal and state law and division policies.
  • Work collaboratively and positively with colleagues, families, and community partners.
  • Direct the work of instructional assistants, student teachers, and volunteers to ensure effective classroom support and individual student success.
  • Adhere to all requirements of VQB5 to include receiving CLASS Observations, utilizing approved curriculum, and completing state assessments.
  • Recruit, screen, and monitor progress of peer models for the class-based settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support efficient school operations.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position operates in a professional school environment that includes classrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, auditoriums, and outdoor learning or recreational areas. The work environment involves noise levels that may range from low to moderate and requires frequent walking, standing, and movement throughout the school day. Occasional climbing, kneeling, or crouching may also be required. Periods of sitting are common while preparing lessons, grading assignments, or completing administrative tasks.

The position may require lifting or moving instructional materials, classroom supplies, or equipment weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 25 pounds or more. Regular use of computers, interactive whiteboards, projectors, printers, and other instructional technologies is required to support teaching and learning.

Clear verbal communication, active listening, and visual attentiveness are essential for delivering instruction and ensuring student safety. The role involves daily interaction with students and regular collaboration with colleagues, administrators, and families. Occasional travel between school sites or participation in supervised field trips may also be required.

Teachers must be able to manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to the demands of a dynamic, fast-paced educational environment.
