Description

Focusing on AAA Northeast's Insurance business, provides oversight and mentorship to team, ensuring application of generally accepted accounting principles, specifically related to ASC 944 for both P&C and Life Insurance. Provides guidance to the team around Insurance accounting, creating whitepapers to be used as guidance and for Audit. Experience in both GAAP and Statutory Insurance accounting, providing timely and accurate financial information to both Finance and Insurance management including preparation of financial reports, variance analysis (actual versus plan), and identification of trends. Provides technical accounting support to the Accounting group, specifically around insurance and reinsurance; prepares and reviews consolidated financial statements in accordance with the company's accounting policies and procedures; assists leadership with the preparation of ad hoc reporting for Insurance, reinsurance, and agency insurance for executive management.

What you will do:

  • Generates and analyzes monthly insurance financial statements for distribution to executive management and the board of directors, this includes equity method accounting for both life and P&C companies, agency insurance commissions, as well as P&C and life reinsured business; compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to general ledger accounts; ensures timely and accurate completion of required standard journal entries to facilitate monthly closing; tracks monthly accruals to ensure accuracy of financial reporting; participates in year-end review of accruals. Establish, review, revise and supervise the maintenance and control of fiscal record-keeping functions and systems within a more complex division/large department. Assist in the coordination with the forecasting and planning team. Assists in the coordination and preparation of financial statements and annual audits
  • Assists the Manager or Director, of Insurance Financial Reporting in providing executive management with financial reports; provides a written analysis of large variances; identifies trends and works to resolve discrepancies; interprets numbers and will prepare ad hoc reports, as we transition to becoming an Agency to a direct writer, insurance is the primary focus of our business. Plan, direct, coordinate and review the work of professional and clerical accounting staff. Provide support to the department’s Staff Accountants in maintaining the internal reporting system which provides control of expenditures, incentives and other activities that may be reimbursable by our partners across all business lines; identifies variances from budget and informs senior management; anticipates business lines needs and distributes pertinent decision-making information. Assist in shaping an allocation methodology to charge club costs to insurance via a service contract. Provide technical and functional supervision over clerical, paraprofessional and professional accounting staff.
  • Makes recommendations to management regarding staffing needs, department policy, and workflow procedures based on department performance trends and routine quality audits. Provide support for the accounting group for reconciliations and analysis. Examine/analyze complex fiscal record-keeping systems and procedures in departments in order to make recommendations for improvements, to determine compliance with codes/ordinances or to prepare reports. Consult with managers and departments on budget, forecasting, and monitor financial reports. Prepare, design, implement and report to management fiscal impacts on special projects. Financial consultant with administrative and program managers. Represents AAA finance department at multi-department meetings and coordinates work with other departments and business lines.
  • Stays abreast of changes in programs, policies or procedures that could impact the department, update the processes for compliance and train the staff so that they can implement them in coordination with effective dates. Review new accounting pronouncements or Insurance laws to determine impact on procedures and to provide guidance in the performance of auditing, accounting and fiscal work; Research, study and apply various accounting and regulatory ordinances to assure us GAAP and NAIC compliance.

Qualifications

Education

 

  • Bachelor's Degree Accounting or related field required and
  • Master's Degree Accounting or related field preferred

 

 

Experience

 

  • 7+ years Accounting experience, preferably in public accounting required and
  • 2+ years Insurance Accounting preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPA upon hire preferred
