Title: Early Childhood Special Education Teacher

Qualifications:    Valid Michigan certificate with Early Childhood-General (ZS or ZA) and Special

Education Endorsement (ASD, CI, SA, EI, SLD, PI, HI, VI, TBI, Etc.)

Job Goal: To meet the educational needs of students on caseload and to comply with the special

education requirements, including but not limited to: completion of evaluations, reports, participation in

meetings, development of educational goals, delivery of services, and consultation with appropriate

individuals.

Essential Duties:

● Individualize instruction and classroom practices to meet the unique needs of students.

● Develop activities in the classroom, school building, and community as appropriate to meet the

needs of students and provide supervision during school hours.

● Maintain effective communications and relationships with students, parents, administrators,

school personnel, and community representatives.

● Demonstrate effective management of student behavior using district-approved techniques and

maintain a safe and orderly classroom.

● Maintain accurate and timely records.

● Evaluate student performance using formal and informal assessments.

● Maintain a written lesson plan for instructional activities that utilize and integrate technology.

● Demonstrate skills to meet the needs of students using equipment, materials, and resources.

● Consult and coordinate with support staff to ensure the effectiveness of instructional

programming.

● Effectively participate in meetings, committees, staffing, and other required district activities,

including but not limited to: parent/teacher conferences, IEPs, school improvement, team

meetings, department meetings, and professional development.

● Follow prescribed building emergency procedures, including but not limited to: tornado, fire,

crisis, medical, and abuse/neglect.

● Inform the Supervisor of Special Education immediately of emergencies, accidents, or illness,

and document on appropriate district report forms and submit to the Supervisor.

● Prepare for and participate in the IEP and MET process.

● Comply with Medicaid billing procedures.

● Maintain confidentiality.

● Be aware of various augmentative and assistive devices and techniques, and utilize them in the

classroom whenever possible.

● Be able to address the specific medical needs of students, as parents and doctors deem

necessary.

● Dispense and record student medications and communicate regularly with the school nurse.

● ​Directly oversee paraprofessionals

Physical Aspects of the Job:

● Physically assist with aggressive student behavior.

● Walk long distances in community-based instruction.

● Demonstrate home living skills and provide hands-on assistance to students.

● Always use universal precautions for personal health and safety.

● Participate in CPI, CPR, AED, Ukeru, and First-Aid training.

● Must be able to lift thirty (30) pounds.

● Required to have a physical presence at the designated job site each scheduled work day.

General Responsibilities:

● Other duties as assigned.

● Adhere to Board Policies and Procedures.


Reports to: Supervisor of Special Education/Principal

 

Evaluation: The performance of this job will be evaluated per the provisions established by the

Administration.

This is a full-time, certified position within the professional staff bargaining unit, as outlined in the BIEA

Collective Bargaining Agreement.


The final candidate for this position will be required (at their own expense) to furnish Barry Intermediate

School District with current Michigan State Police and FBI criminal records, as well as a LiveScan

check, before we make a recommendation to hire.
