    JOB DESCRIPTION:

     

    The goal of an English Learner (EL) paraprofessional is to support the academic and language development of students who are learning English by working under the direction of certified staff. This role focuses on reinforcing instruction, assisting with small group and one-on-one support, and helping students access grade-level content while developing their English skills. The EL paraprofessional also plays a key role in creating a welcoming environment, supporting newcomer transitions, and fostering positive communication between schools and multilingual families. 

     

    The typical work schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday for 8 hours per day, with 4-hour shifts every other Friday.

     

    This position will be based at Driggs Elementary but may be reassigned to other school sites depending on district needs. 

     

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

     
    • Work collaboratively with the EL teacher, newcomer specialists, and Multilingual Programs Director to support English Learners in K–3 classrooms.

    • Assist in the delivery of small group and one-on-one language and academic support.

    • Reinforce language development skills as directed by certified staff using appropriate strategies and scaffolds.

    • Support in the preparation and organization of instructional materials.

    • Maintain accurate documentation of student support, progress, and services provided.

    • Assist in the administration of language screening, progress monitoring, and assessments under the guidance of the EL teacher.

    • Help facilitate newcomer student transitions, orientation tasks, and school routines.

    • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and personal information.

    • Participate in professional development related to language acquisition, cultural competency, and instructional strategies for multilingual learners.

    • Contribute to a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for EL students and families.

    • Support communication with families, including interpretation or translation when appropriate (if applicable).

    • Perform other duties as assigned that support the success of EL students and the goals of the multilingual programs team.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    Education: Two years or equivalent of post-secondary education; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

     

    Language Skills:

     
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students learning English as a second language.

    • Ability to speak, read, and write clearly in English; proficiency in Spanish or other languages is a plus.

    • Ability to write simple reports and keep records as directed.

     

    Mathematical Skills:

     
    • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and apply them in an educational context.

     

    Reasoning Ability:

     
    • Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.

    • Ability to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

     

    Other Skills and Abilities:

     
    • Understanding of the challenges English learners face in a school setting.

    • Cultural responsiveness and empathy toward newcomer students and families.

    • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, and families.

    • Strong organizational and communication skills.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

     

    This position is “employment at will.” Employment is subject to the policies, regulations, and direction of the Board of Trustees and district administrators. All employees are responsible for understanding and complying with district policies and expectations.

     

    -  Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement if IEP objectives, etc.

     

     

     

    -  Participates in IEP process and serves as resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed.

     

     

     

    -  Assist students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.

     

     

     

    -  Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.

    Qualifications Profile

     

     

     

    -  Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

     

     

     

    -  High School diploma or equivalent.

     

     

     

    -  Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.

     

     

     

    -  Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
