JOB SUMMARY:

The Elementary Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in both general education and special education classroom environments. This role involves implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), delivering accommodations and modifications, and ensuring students have access to the general education curriculum. The teacher will collaborate closely with general education teachers, support staff, administrators, and families to promote student success, inclusion, and positive outcomes. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the teacher will support and consult regularly to meet the diverse needs of learners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with at least one special education endorsement.  
  • Ability to establish positive, working relationships with teachers, special education providers, parents, and administrators through professional communication
  • Knowledge and consistent application of the legal and ethical practices and procedures for special education and specialty areas
  • Thorough knowledge and application of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching of students with disabilities


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & KNOWLEDGEABLE SKILLS:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver specialized instruction to students with Individualized Education Programs, in both the general education and special education environments, that facilitates active learning
  • Serve as primary contact for identified students on an assigned caseload on items relevant to a student’s special education services and/or plans
  • Develop and flexibly adjust schedules for student support in accordance with student needs, classroom and building schedules, instructional demands, and IEP goals
  • Coordinate with outside agencies to assist students with post-secondary opportunities and services provided to individuals beyond graduation
  • Collaboratively develop, implement, and facilitate IEP meetings, REED meetings and development of Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction
  • Provide guidance, support, and meaningful  feedback to paraprofessionals assigned to caseload students
  • Maintain and update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations
  • Collaborate with general education staff, school social workers, speech therapists, and other ancillary staff 
  • Participate in grade-level, department, school, district, and parent meetings
  • Attend and actively participate in professional development activities provided and/or supported by the district
  • Perform other duties as assigned
