MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Must hold a minimum of an associate’s degree, its equivalent, or have taken and passed the professional certification assessment. Priority will be given to individuals who hold a teaching certificate.
GOAL:
This position is a classified position that supports the instructional success of students with disabilities through small group instruction, monitoring, behavior interventions, and supporting adaptive skills, which may include feeding, dressing, toileting, and orientation within the school. This position provides support for special education students within the classroom through a variety of strategies in specified areas under the supervision of a highly qualified teacher and the students’ case manager.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Carries out small group lesson plans and works on individual education plans as directed by the supervising teacher and/or case manager.
Communicates well with the general education teacher and the exceptional student services teacher in order to describe behaviors, academic successes, and areas of difficulty.
Communicates well with students with disabilities in order to help them understand directions and to access the curriculum as successfully as possible.
Learns how to use any equipment the student may need to access the curriculum, such as augmentative communication devices, wheelchairs, walkers, or adaptive equipment.
Accepts training that will support the overall ability to be successful at the job and support student needs.
Willingness to obtain restraint training and demonstrate the ability to restrain students, if necessary, non-violently.
Assists students with toileting and feeding, if necessary.
Supports students with behavior, academic, sensory or adaptive skills in a variety of settings that may include the lunchroom, gym, playground, hallway, general education classroom, special education classroom, inclusion, or electives/special areas.
Completes other duties as assigned.
Acts in a professional manner and maintains a professional attitude towards the public and colleagues, and exhibits the fundamentals of good public/customer service.
Recognizes cultural diversity in dealing with students, parents, coworkers, and the public.
Complies with school, system, state, and federal regulations and policies, including the PSC Code of Ethics, as related to job requirements.
Participates in appropriate training, workshops, and staff development activities and applies information learned to the job; and accepts new challenges professionally.
Takes direction readily in a cooperative manner from the supervisor.
Provides adequate supervision of students at all times.
Disciplines students with fairness and equity.
Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information and material and adheres to the chain of command.
Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
Constant and consistent ability to supervise students required.
One-on-One Paraprofessionals:
Provides one-on-one support to students to include but not limited to:
Support Student Communication with an AAC device, such as prompting communication, modeling, ensuring access, and following the IEP plan.Facilitate Peer Interaction - redirection interactions, ensure proximity.
Support the implementation of the Behavior Intervention plan.
General support, supervision throughout the school day and different settings, and Data Collection.
Assist with toileting needs.
