Job Title: Full-Time Homebased and Homebound Special Education Teacher (K–12)

Position Summary:

The Homebased and Homebound Special Education Teacher provides specially designed instruction to students in grades K–12 who are no longer able to participate in the traditional comprehensive school setting due to medical, disciplinary, emotional, and/or behavioral needs. This teacher will deliver instruction through a blend of online learning platforms, district-provided curriculum, virtual sessions, or in-person support, while maintaining regular communication with students, families, and support teams.

The teacher will maintain a caseload of approximately 24 students and ensure compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), providing equitable access to education in the least restrictive environment possible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction to students through multiple modalities: virtual (e.g., Zoom), in-person visits (as required), and asynchronous support using online learning platforms.
  • Utilize WJCC-approved digital curriculum and home school-provided materials to tailor educational experiences to student needs.
  • Adapt and modify general education materials and lessons to meet individualized learning goals.
  • Serve as the IEP team member for assigned students, attend IEP meetings in collaboration with school teams, related service providers, and families.
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and school staff regarding academic progress, attendance, and engagement.
  • Coordinate services with school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and related service providers.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, progress, services provided, and IEP documentation in compliance with federal, state, and district requirements.
  • Provide regular progress reports and complete the required assessments and documentation.
  • Conduct routine check-ins with students and families to monitor academic and emotional well-being.
  • Participate in professional development related to virtual instruction, trauma-informed practices, and specialized instructional strategies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable regulations including IDEA, FERPA, and district policies.
  • Travel between home sites and schools as necessary (mileage reimbursed per WJCC policy).

Qualifications:

  • Valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Special Education K–12.
  • Experience working with students with diverse disabilities in individualized and/or alternative educational settings.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology, including virtual conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom), learning management systems, and digital curriculum.
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience with homebound instruction, online or hybrid learning environments.
  • Familiarity with IEP compliance, behavior intervention strategies, and trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in flexible, non-traditional instructional settings.

Work Environment:

  • The role requires travel within Williamsburg-James City County for in-home instruction and meetings.
  • Occasional evening meetings may be required to accommodate family schedules.
