Middle School Special Education Teacher

Location: James L. Germany Middle School DeKalb, Texas

Reports To: Campus Principal / Director of Special Education

Job Summary

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing a high-quality, inclusive, and adaptive learning environment for students with physical, emotional, or cognitive disabilities. You will design and implement specialized instruction, monitor student progress toward Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards, and lead the collaborative process between parents, administrators, and general education staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • Certification: Valid Texas Educator Certificate in Special Education (EC-12).
  • Content Competency: Depending on the assignment, you may also need a content-area certification (e.g., Core Subjects EC-6 or 4-8) to meet Texas "Teacher of Record" requirements.
  • Skills: Strong knowledge of Federal (IDEA) and State (TAC) special education laws; proficiency in data collection and educational technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • IEP Development & Implementation: Design, write, and execute Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each assigned student, ensuring all instructional and behavioral goals are met.
  • ARD Committee Participation: Serve as a core member of the ARD committee, assisting with the interpretation of assessment data and determining appropriate student placement and services.
  • Adaptive Instruction: Modify the regular curriculum and use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the unique capabilities and needs of each student.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with general education teachers to implement modifications and accommodations in inclusive classroom settings.
  • Progress Monitoring: Conduct formal and informal assessments, maintain accurate student records, and issue regular progress reports to parents.
  • Classroom Management: Create a safe, productive environment and implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs), which may include crisis intervention or physical restraint as specified by the IEP.
  • Data-Driven Documentation: Lead the development of comprehensive PLAAFP statements and IEP goals that ensure "Free Appropriate Public Education" (FAPE) in accordance with TEA guidelines.
  • Delivery of SDI: Provide Specially Designed Instruction through research-based methodologies to address the unique needs identified in the student’s Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE).
  • Compliance Monitoring: Maintain meticulous records of SDI delivery and goal progress to ensure the district remains in compliance with federal IDEA and Texas state law.

Special Education Teacher stipend $1,000.

Elementary core subject positions are eligible to earn Teacher Incentive Allotment Pay based on student performance and evaluation.

DeKalb ISD maintains a pay scale that is competitive in the region and at least $4,000 above the state minimum salary schedule.

Free Pre-K is provided for children of teacher's working in the district.
