Position Summary/Purpose:
The Paraprofessional for Low Incidence Students provides intensive support to students with significant cognitive, physical, medical, and/or communication needs. Under the supervision of a licensed special education teacher, the paraprofessional ensures student safety, promotes independence, and assists with instructional, behavioral, and personal care needs in both classroom and community-based settings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work 1:1 or in small groups with students who require high levels of academic, behavioral, and/or medical support.
Assist students with activities of daily living (e.g., toileting, diapering, tube feeding, dressing, hygiene, mobility).
Implement accommodations, modifications, and individualized strategies under the guidance.
Support students using adaptive equipment, assistive technology, communication devices, and sensory tools.
Implement behavior support plans and apply strategies to de-escalate challenging behaviors.
Maintain accurate records and data collection related to behavior, medical care, or instructional progress.
Monitor students during transitions, in community-based settings, and on school transportation, as needed.
Collaborate with special education staff, related service providers, and medical personnel to meet student needs.
Promote student dignity, independence, and inclusion at all times.
Assist with physical interventions as trained and required, including lifting or repositioning students.
Adhere to confidentiality laws, safety procedures, and district policies.
Participate in ongoing training related to disability-specific supports, behavior management, and medical care.
Qualifications:
Must meet one of the following per Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) paraprofessional requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must meet one of the following per Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) paraprofessional requirements: Associate’s degree or higher; or 60 semester hours of college credit; or Passing score on the ETS ParaPro Assessment (we can help guide you if you do not have this)
Demonstrated ability to work patiently, respectfully, and effectively with students of varying needs and backgrounds.
Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and adapt to classroom needs.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to lift, transfer, and assist students with mobility and physical needs (up to 50 pounds or more with assistance).
Willingness to support medical care tasks with appropriate training (e.g., suctioning, tube feeding, seizure protocol).
CPI, First Aid/CPR (or willingness to be trained).
Preferred skills/experience:
As a multi-language district, we always prefer staff who are bilingual but it is not required for this position
Experience working with children in educational or care settings is preferred.
Environmental Conditions: indoor climate-controlled office environment
