SUMMARY
Under the overall direction of the Early Childhood Director and general direction of the GSRP Teacher, the Paraprofessional performs a variety of instructional and routine clerical duties related to the program.
Program is for children 3-5 years of age to help them prepare for kindergarten. Assists in the daily operational aspects of the instructional program. Performs a variety of tasks which assist certified personnel in meeting the educational, physical and social needs of young children. Provides instruction and training on an individual student basis, and in small or large groups. Service may be provided in a classroom, job site or in the home. Prepares, organizes and maintains materials.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Carry out instructional plans as designated by the teacher and the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
• Assist students in curriculum activities, redirection for tasks, appropriate social skills, problem solving and other subjects according to instructions and guidance from the teacher.
• Participates in developing, preparing and maintaining instructional materials.
• Accurate documentation of behaviors, data collection and feedback on a daily basis.
• Personal Care, food preparation, health care and medication dispensing duties as assigned
• Assist students with personal difficulties by assisting instructor to keep students and staff safe in aggressive situations.
• Perform routine clerical tasks such as taking roll, correcting papers, filling out forms, recording scores and grades, collecting monies, documenting of behaviors, setting up student portfolios, and updating student files.
• Observe students and assists the teacher in maintaining order in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, general premises and/or on district approved field trips.
• Maintain control of student behavior individually and in small groups and on/off campus by enforcing behavior plans.
• Set up and arranges supplies and equipment for student use in a classroom or computer lab.
• Prepare bulletin boards, charts, labels and displays as instructed.
• Individually tutors students and administers make-up tests and gives informal assessments as instructed.
• Operate modern office equipment, computers and related software, and overhead projector, etc.
• Under direction, notify parents of absences, meetings, and student behavior, orally or in writing.
• Escort behaviorally challenged students to and from offices, lunch, restrooms, buses, nurse’s office, other classes, etc. Students may include’ but are not limited to: ambulatory or physically challenged students.
• May assist in laundry routine when necessary.
• May assist in cleaning/disinfecting classroom environment when necessary.
• Maintain and respect confidentiality of student information.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (If Applicable):
• Attain and maintain Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification
o NOTE: Initial and/or Refresher Training provided by District
EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Advanced training in a community college or degree-granting institution whose early childhood
instructional training has been approved by the Department of Education, including one of the
following:
o Child Development Associate credential (CDA)
o Associate’s degree in early childhood/preschool education or child development
o One hundred twenty (120) clock hours of documented formal child care education offered by
approved training organizations and approved by the Michigan Department of education
o Bachelor’s degree with a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an Early Childhood
Education (ZA) or Early Childhood-General and Special Education (ZS) endorsement;
Desired
• Possession of an Associate’s Degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field.
• Two (2) years or more experience working as an aide in a day care training program, preschool
classroom, or equivalent experience.

• Knowledge of CPI and methods used to positively support student behavior.
• Knowledge of general needs and behavior of EI students.
• Knowledge of basic personal hygiene practices and procedures.
• Skill with use of technology to implement work responsibilities.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with adults and students.
• Ability to reinforce instruction in the area of language arts, math, social studies, science, social
skills, and problem solving.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work with individuals and small
groups of students.
• Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and internal staff.
• Ability to communicate with students/youth and motivate them to participate in learning activities.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences both orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
• Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with staff, students and operations.
• Ability to work independently and within teams to accomplish identified goals and strategies.
• Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and students.
