Special Education Paraprofessional - Preschool
Monday through Thursday (no Friday's) 9:00am - 4:00pm.
HOURS: 9:00 am -12:15pm; 12:45pm – 4:00 pm
Total: 6.5 hours (1/2 Hour Lunch) (Monday-Thursday)
REPORTS TO: Building Administration/Designee
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 Months According to School Calendar
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated record of successful employment.
- Educational Aide permit with Highly Qualified (ESEA) endorsement is required.
- Valid CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) is required.
- Valid CPR/First Aid Certificates are required. Specialized in-person training to be completed within the first 90 days of hire.
- Medical statement (ODE 3301-37-04) required by licensed physician, physician’s assistant, advanced practice registered nurse, or certified nurse practitioner that documents they are free of communicable disease and fit to work with children.
- Child Abuse and neglect recognition and prevention training is to be completed within the first sixty days of hire. In addition, you must complete a minimum of 10 Ohio Approved clock hours of training annually each fiscal year.
- Three reference letters are required by ODE licensing.
- Must successfully pass a physical assessment including a material handling lift test up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to physically guide students.
- Previous experience working with children with disabilities is desired.
- Willing to participate in special education in-services offered through Board-approved training facilities. ODE licensing requires 15 hours of training in Early Childhood content each year beginning with first day of contract until 45 hours are met. Thereafter, 10 hours are required each year.
- Emotional maturity and stability with a positive cheerful outlook.
- Ability to interact well with parents and district staff.
- Ability to move up and down from the floor to work with children.
- Must be able to act with low emotion and consistently implement a three-part behavioral plan with daily documentation, skills in maintaining calmness, and minimizing stressful situations.
- Must complete all training as required by Sylvania Schools and/or the Ohio Department of Education.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work at eye level with individual children to reinforce learning introduced by the teacher.
- Communicate appropriately with preschool children at individual levels of ability.
- Provide physical care of children (diapering, etc.) without prompting.
- Follow intervention strategies for children as recommended by teacher(s) or therapist(s).
- Supervise children while they work, answer questions, explain directions, and give appropriate assistance.
- Maintain awareness of classroom while attending to safety concerns.
- Accompany children to and from bus if necessary.
- Assist in preparing daily materials.
- Keep documentation of student progress as directed by the teacher.
- Show respect and maintain confidentiality of all students and their families.
- Participate in home visits and orientation of new children.
- Provide assistance with feeding, toileting, hygiene management, wheelchair use, and physical transfers
for student(s). Some students may need special assistance with tube feeding and catheterization.
- Implement specific strategies for students as identified through IEP or behavior plan.
- Responsible to enter personal absences and clock in/out via the Red Rover System.
- Responsible to check your district email account on a regular basis, and to communicate as needed via district email.
- Perform other tasks and assume responsibility from building administration as necessary to promote student success and achievement.
