SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
BLACKROCK SCHOOL
STEP/SALARY: BA - 6TH YEAR / $50,825 -$105,070

The Special Education teacher is responsible for developing Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students, providing pre-academic instruction, assessing students' knowledge, needs, and abilities, facilitating Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings, and inputting information into CT SEDS. The Special Education Teacher will be expected to communicate and collaborate with families and community providers in a professional, efficient, and thorough manner. The Special Education teacher assumes responsibility for consulting with necessary school personnel to provide appropriate modifications and accommodations as mandated by the student's IEP.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates comprehensive and current knowledge of CT Early Learning and Development Standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development as it relates to the learning/teaching process.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and respect for diversity of cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
  • Identifies and sequences goals, objectives, strategies, and assessments, which provide for individual differences.
  • Develops the elements of an effective IEP and implements instructional services which incorporates necessary accommodations and modifications
  • Establishes present levels of performance and instructional goals/objectives based on standardized assessments and clinical judgment.
  • Communicates with families regarding their child's special education needs and programs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of national, state, and local standards while consistently meeting CT state compliance standards.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively on a multi-disciplinary team to meet the needs of students and their families.
  • Proficient and consistent with use of CT SEDS.
  • Develops and maintains systems for efficient record keeping, documentation, and educational planning.
  • Establishes rapport and fosters positive relationships with colleagues, families, and the community. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Connecticut teaching certification (165, 112, or 113) master’s degree preferred.
  • Three years of successful teaching experience in an urban setting preferred.
  • Experience in the use of CT SEDS.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for self-growth, professional improvement, ongoing self-reflection, or self-evaluation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.

 Salary will be   in accordance with the BEA contract salary schedule.
