Client Overview
Our client is a private day school serving students from kindergarten through fourth grade. Located in Portsmouth, VA, the academy is dedicated to supporting children diagnosed with developmental disabilities, emotional disturbances, specific learning disabilities, autism, and other health impairments. The school provides a structured and nurturing environment tailored to each student’s unique needs.
Position Summary
The Special Education Intern will assist in delivering individualized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs. This role involves working both one-on-one and in small groups, helping students develop academic and social skills. The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of School and collaborate with paraprofessionals and other staff members.
Key Responsibilities
- Support teaching and training of students with autism, developmental disabilities, emotional disturbances, and other health impairments.
- Assist in developing and implementing individualized instructional programs.
- Help facilitate specialized subject matter and encourage students to reach their full potential.
- Monitor student progress and assist in maintaining records and preparing reports.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences, staff meetings, and professional development activities.
- Supervise and escort students throughout the school building.
- Perform administrative tasks using computer-based applications.
- Model inclusive and non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Light physical work (lifting up to 20 lbs occasionally).
- Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, and repetitive motions.
- Requires vocal communication, hearing at normal levels, and visual acuity for data analysis and observation.
- Work may occur in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Some specialties (e.g., music, art, PE) may require additional physical coordination and effort.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in special education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Interest in obtaining a Virginia teaching license (postgraduate, collegiate, or provisional) in any disability category.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Passion for working with children with special needs in an educational setting.
- Visa Status: US Citizen, Green Card & F1.
