Job Title: Special Education Teacher

 

Qualifications:

  1. Kansas Certification in the area of exceptionality required for the assigned program either a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in High or Low Incidence or an equivalent previously named degree.

 

Reports to: Director of Special Education, Assistant Director of Special Education

 

General Job Description: Provide direct and indirect specialized education to students determined eligible through evaluation tools.

 

Supervises: Special Education Paraeducators

 

Performance Responsibilities: 

 

  1. Design instructional activities that remediate weaknesses, support the learner in the regular classroom setting, or provide alternative curricular content suited to the learner's needs. 
  2. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction which relates specifically to the learners’ needs, making adjustments, as needed to facilitate student learning. 
  3. Establish and maintain a climate for learning through appropriate classroom management. 
  4. Consult with regular classroom teachers to monitor student performance and help determine alternative interventions for classroom success.
  5. Administer formal and informal  tests to assess student's level of performance and make instructional recommendations
  6. Serve as a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation team, SIT team, to provide insight to parents and staff from the teachers of expertise.
  7. Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and interpret academic needs
  8. Supervise students in out-of-classroom settings, as assigned
  9. Serve on committees to promote or further the goals and policies of the district. 

 

Other: 

  1. Continuously measure student progress toward learning goals and objectives to guide instructional decisions. 
  2. Use data to drive the annual review of the student’s IEP. 
  3. Coordinate the annual review of the student’s IEP within the required one-year time frame, assembling the team and eliciting input from IEP members (parents, teachers, administrators, and related staff providers, if relevant). 
  4. Design students’ IEPs, to reflect input and recommendations of the team. 
  5. Send Special Services all appropriate paperwork on time. 
  6. Prepare reports, grade cards, and progress reports
  7. Update student progress toward IEP goals and objectives on a nine-week basis. 
  8. Organize paraeducator schedules, completely bi-yearly evaluations
  9. Maintain professional competencies through participation in in-service activities. 
  10. Follows USD 321 Kaw Valley Handbook
  11. Perform other duties and responsibilities as determined by the administration.
  12. Facilitates meetings effectively. 

 

Physical Requirements:

  1. May require minimal travel
  2. Must be able to work in a busy and crowded environment

 

Terms of Employment: 

Salary and work year to be established by the Kaw Valley USD #321 School Board. Maintain a valid license on file at Special Services. 

 

Evaluation

The performance of the position will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy.
