Special Education Teacher

JOB SUMMARY

The Special Education Teacher provides specially designed instruction and support services to students with disabilities in accordance with their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The teacher works collaboratively with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and families to support students in accessing the general education curriculum and making meaningful academic, behavioral, and functional progress.

This position may provide services in a resource room setting, through push-in support within general education classrooms, or through small-group and individualized instruction. The teacher is responsible for case management duties, including IEP development, progress monitoring, and compliance with federal and state special education requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Idaho Exceptional Child Certificate (Special Education K–12 Specialist or Early Childhood Special Education (Pre-K-3) required
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Understanding of federal and state laws governing special education, including IDEA, ADA, Section 504, and Idaho administrative rules
  • Experience modifying and adapting curriculum to support students with diverse learning needs
  • Knowledge of Idaho Content Standards and strategies for supporting access to grade-level curriculum
  • Ability to use data and progress monitoring tools to inform instructional decisions
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with general education teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families
  • Experience supervising and working with paraprofessionals
  • Skilled in using technology and assistive technology to support student learning
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a positive learning environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and staff information
  • Ability to lift up to forty pounds and push or pull up to one hundred pounds when necessary to assist students

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY TO

Building Principal

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction

  • Provide specially designed instruction aligned with each student’s IEP
  • Deliver small-group and individualized instruction to support academic and functional skill development
  • Support students in accessing the general education curriculum through accommodations, modifications, and differentiated instruction
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices and effective classroom supports
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, interventions, and assistive technologies to support student learning
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on data and ongoing assessment
  • Prepare students for district and state assessments as appropriate

Communication and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented effectively
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and support strategies
  • Work with related service providers, counselors, and school staff to coordinate services for students
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional learning communities, and collaborative planning sessions

Oversight of Paraprofessionals

  • Provide direction and support to paraprofessionals working with students receiving special education services
  • Assist in training paraprofessionals in instructional strategies, behavior supports, and data collection
  • Monitor implementation of instructional supports and accommodations

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and compliant records related to student services and IEP implementation
  • Attend professional development related to special education and instructional practices
  • Remain current with best practices in special education instruction and intervention strategies
  • Participate in school and district initiatives related to student support services

Case Management

  • Serve as case manager for assigned students with disabilities
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in compliance with federal and state requirements
  • Develop measurable goals aligned with Idaho Content Standards or Alternate Achievement Standards when appropriate
  • Maintain accurate documentation of services, progress monitoring, and student data
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for evaluations, reevaluations, and eligibility determinations

IEP Development and Collaboration

  • Assist with supervision duties as assigned by the building principal
  • Uphold school rules and district policies
  • Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the role
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

COMPENSATION

Salary based on experience and skills. Position qualifies for benefits which include health, dental, vision and life insurance; PERSI retirement, as well as access to optional ancillary insurance and retirement products.
