Primary Purpose

Provide specially designed instruction and support to students with disabilities across a variety of instructional settings, including inclusion, resource, and life skills. Collaborate with campus staff and families to implement individualized educational programs (IEPs) that promote academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional skill development for students with varying needs and disabilities. Assignments may vary depending on campus and student population needs.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with Special Education EC–12 certification

  • Certification in core academic subject(s) (if applicable) or enrollment in an approved certification program

  • ESL certification preferred (may be required based on district needs)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of special education laws and IEP implementation

  • Familiarity with inclusive, resource, and life skills instructional strategies

  • Ability to differentiate curriculum and manage a variety of learning needs

  • Knowledge of behavior intervention plans, assistive technology, and alternate academic achievement standards (STAAR Alt 2)

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

Experience:

  • One year of student teaching or internship in a special education setting preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies

  1. Develop and deliver instruction aligned with students’ IEPs across instructional settings (inclusion, resource, or life skills).

  2. Adapt curriculum and materials based on student needs and instructional goals.

  3. Utilize data-driven strategies, assistive technology, and visual supports.

  4. Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and co-teaching models.

  5. Prepare students for transition goals and independent living when applicable.

Student Growth and Development
6. Monitor and document academic and functional progress through data collection and assessment.
7. Teach daily living, communication, and vocational readiness skills for students in Life Skills settings.
8. Promote self-advocacy, social skills, and independence across environments.

Classroom Management and Organization
9. Create a structured, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment.
10. Supervise and support paraprofessionals as assigned.
11. Follow all safety protocols for student needs including lifting, toileting, and feeding where applicable.
12. Maintain student records, IEP documentation, and instructional materials.

Communication and Collaboration
13. Maintain open and professional communication with families, staff, and service providers.
14. Participate in ARD meetings, team planning, and staff development.
15. Collaborate with administrators and special education staff on service delivery and scheduling.

Professional Responsibilities
16. Attend required professional development and stay current on special education practices and compliance.
17. Comply with district, state, and federal regulations related to special education.
18. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor to meet student needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise assigned paraprofessionals and classroom aides

Working Conditions

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; manage diverse student needs and behaviors
Physical Demands: Frequent standing, bending, lifting, assisting students with mobility or personal care needs
Environment: Classroom and community settings; exposure to biological hazards possible
