Professional Staff Position  

 

Title:                    Special Education Teacher  

 

Qualifications:    Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in the areas of teaching  responsibility  

 

Reports to:          Director of Special Services, Building Principal  

 

Supervises:         Paraprofessionals as assigned  

 

Job Goal:             To help students learn subject matter, skills, appropriate attitudes and values so as to enable them to become mature, productive, and responsible members of society.  

 

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

1.  Plans and organizes the curriculum and learning activities to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of individual students__maintains written outlines and lesson plans aligned to the Core Academic Standards and Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.  

 

2.  Uses instructional techniques, methods, and materials that best contribute to learning the desired subject matter, skills, attitudes, and values.  Teachers are expected to acquaint themselves with the latest effective school research on instructional techniques and become trained in technology to further engage students.  

 

3.  Assists the special education staff in screening and diagnosis of students and provides appropriate instructional services and program evaluation for students with special needs.  

 

4.  Creates and maintains a classroom environment that is positive and is conducive to  maximum learning.  

 

5.  Maintains complete and accurate records of student academic achievement, attendance, misconduct, etc. as required by state law, district policy, and  administrative rules in a timely manner.  

 

6.  Becomes familiar with and assists in the implementation and enforcement of Board policies, administrative, and school rules and regulations.  

 

7.   Develops and implements behavior plans as needed.  Documents interaction with student and parents when addressing student behavior.  

 

8.  Be available for parent-teacher-student conferences and/or for educational purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

   

9.  Observes professional ethics in all matters relating to students, parents, and colleagues.  

 

10. Fulfills all extracurricular responsibilities assigned.  

 

11. Partakes in all staff related activities that focus on building and district professional growth.  

 

12. Develops a professional development plan to be reviewed annually by teacher and administrator.  

 

13. Understands and disseminates the special education screening, referral, and diagnostic process to staff and parents/patrons.  

 

14. Communicates and contributes as a team member during special education screening meetings, diagnostic staffings, IEP, and other conferences.  

 

15. Administers test instruments, conducts observations, and collects data for individual evaluations, reports, and uses results appropriately.  

 

16. Provides consultation or inservice workshops concerning special education as needed by colleagues or parents/patrons.  

 

17. Interacts with personnel from other agencies or community organizations when necessary.  

 

18. Collects data related to IEP goals and adjusts programming instruction appropriately.  

 

19. Plans, supervises, and evaluates the activities of paraprofessionals as may be assigned.

 

20. Other duties, not specifically mentioned above, may be assigned by the Director of Special Services or Principal.    

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary and work year to be established by Board Policy  

 

EVALUATION:  Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy
