Position Overview

Enfield High School seeks a highly skilled and student-centered Special Education Teacher to support learners who require individualized academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support. This position is designed for educators committed to helping students develop the skills, independence, and confidence needed to access and participate more fully in general education programming. The teacher will deliver instruction aligned with each student’s IEP while fostering a learning environment that emphasizes growth, inclusion, and high expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Learning Support

  • Deliver targeted, research-based specially designed instruction across academic, executive functioning, and social-emotional domains.
  • Implement structured, explicit teaching techniques including:
    • Direct instruction
    • Systematic scaffolding
    • Frequent checks for understanding
    • Modeling and guided practice
    • Multi-sensory instructional approaches
  • Utilize evidence-based behavior supports such as positive reinforcement, visual supports, and proactive classroom management.
  • Provide individualized and small-group instruction aligned with student learning goals.
  • Support students in building self-advocacy and independence skills needed for increasing participation in grade-level curriculum.

Collaboration & Team Engagement

  • Collaborate closely with general education teachers to align instructional strategies and ensure access to grade-level content.
  • Participate in PPT meetings, collaborate with related service providers, and communicate regularly with families.
  • Coordinate with school counselors, behavior specialists, and other support staff to promote student success.

Assessment & Data Practices

  • Conduct ongoing progress monitoring and adjust instruction using data-driven decision-making.
  • Administer accommodations and modifications as outlined in each IEP.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation of student progress and service delivery.

Student Skill Development

  • Help students develop academic stamina, organization, task initiation, and other skills needed for increased involvement in general education activities.
  • Support social-emotional learning through explicit instruction, structured routines, and positive classroom climate.
  • Provide guidance in developing problem-solving, coping, and communication strategies that promote autonomy.

Qualifications

  • Valid Connecticut Teaching Certification in Special Education (065, 165, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, Connecticut IEP requirements, and best practices in specialized instruction.
  • Experience providing differentiated instruction and using assistive technology to support learning.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and supporting students in reaching their fullest potential.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting high school-aged learners with diverse learning profiles.
  • Ability to design and implement structured literacy, math intervention, or executive functioning support programs.
  • Familiarity with restorative practices and trauma-sensitive approaches.

Work Environment

  • The position operates within a collaborative and supportive Special Services team. The educator will engage in ongoing professional learning, contribute to schoolwide initiatives, and uphold Enfield Public Schools’ commitment to equity, belonging, and academic excellence.
