Job Summary: 

The Special Education Teacher Consultant in Van Dyke Public Schools provides specialized support to students with disabilities within the general education setting, while also building staff capacity to meet diverse learning needs. This role involves close collaboration with teachers, support staff, paraprofessionals, and families to ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education, and all applicable district and county policies and procedures. The Teacher Consultant facilitates IEP team meetings, conducts educational observations and evaluations, and develops and models effective academic and behavioral interventions. In addition, they work in collaboration with team members to provide ongoing support to staff on instructional strategies, intervention practices, procedures, and compliance requirements to ensure students are successfully supported in the least restrictive environment.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Special Education endorsement.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience in a special education classroom setting.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Special Education or a closely related field.
  • Full approval as a Teacher Consultant from the Michigan Department of Education, or the ability to obtain approval by the first day of school 2026.
  • Demonstrated expertise in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting student data to develop clear, comprehensive Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP), including targeted plans for remediation and support.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce concise, compliant, and meaningful reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams in high-pressure or complex situations while maintaining professionalism and composure.
  • Proven experience developing high-quality Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that include measurable goals and objectives, appropriate supplementary aids and services, and alignment to student needs to ensure meaningful educational progress.
  • Experience designing and delivering professional development to educators and staff. 
  • Experience representing the district positively as a productive and professional participant in district, county, and/or state committees. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provide specially designed instruction to students on caseload in the general education setting. 
  • Develop, prepare, and facilitate IEPs for all students on caseload.
  • Attend annual IEPs, move up IEPs, and participate in IEP team meetings as a consultant and the district designee, and support problem-solving for complex student cases.
  • Attend building MTSS meetings, building SE team meetings, district TC meetings, and communicate the meeting outcomes and action plans to all necessary parties.  
  • Lead building special education department meetings. 
  • Provide collaboration and coaching to general and special education staff to design and implement evidence-based instructional strategies, behavior supports, and accommodations for students with disabilities. 
  • Serve as a building resource for special education compliance, instructional practices, and program development.
  • Support evaluation teams in the identification and eligibility determination process for students suspected of having disabilities by completing academic observations and evaluations, and providing a written report of outcomes to help with eligibility determinations. 
  • Assist building SE staff in the development, review, and monitoring of IEPs to ensure legal compliance and educational effectiveness.
  • Analyze student data to inform decision-making and support continuous improvement of student outcomes.
  • Facilitate and deliver professional learning opportunities related to special education practices, compliance, and inclusive instruction.
  • Ensure adherence to timelines, documentation requirements, and procedural safeguards in accordance with state and federal law for all building special education staff.
  • Support families by providing clear communication, guidance, and resources related to special education services.
  • Collaborate with administrators to ensure consistency and fidelity of special education programs, processes, and procedures across buildings.
  • Support building administrators on special education discipline procedures and processes to ensure compliance. 
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of the students
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and the community
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and the necessary software. 
  • Secondary TCs will work as the transition coordinator of the building and attend necessary meetings at the MISD
  • Ensure all IEPs have only allowable state and local test accommodations and communicate these accommodations with the SSD coordinator to have them submitted to the College Board for approval.
  • Attend teacher consultant professional development during the summer. 
  • Stay current on changes in legislation, guidance, and best practices in special education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building or district administrators.
