Position: Special Education Teacher - CHAMPS Program

Job Summary and Requirements: The CHAMPS program is a specialized behavior management program designed for students with significant behavioral challenges. Operating within a self-contained environment inside general education buildings, CHAMPS focuses on providing research-based interventions and positive reinforcement to facilitate a gradual transition back to traditional classroom settings. Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans, assess student performance and progress, maintain effective classroom management and a positive learning environment, collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and parents, and participate in professional development and school events. The position requires the ability to remain emotionally stable, exercise sound judgment, and maintain professional composure in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple responsibilities and responding appropriately to student needs and unexpected situations. The role also requires the ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods; move throughout the classroom and school; and lift and carry materials or equipment weighing 20 pounds or more as needed.

  • Instructional Leadership: Lead a self-contained classroom, delivering all academic and non-academic instruction tailored to the individual needs of students while adhering to Indiana state standards.
  • Behavioral Intervention: Implement and oversee research-based behavior modification strategies and the CHAMPS positive reinforcement framework to promote significant behavior change.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Conduct ongoing data analysis of student behavioral and academic performance to adjust Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and intervention plans.
  • Gradual Release Management: Systematically monitor student readiness for integration into general education (e.g., recess, lunch, related arts, or core classes). Provide staff support during these transition periods.
  • Team Supervision: Direct and collaborate with a team of behavioral support instructional assistants to maintain a 1:3 staff-to-student ratio and ensure a safe, supportive environment.
  • Communication: Maintain high-frequency contact with parents regarding student progress (daily for Elementary; weekly for Intermediate/Middle School).
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications: Valid teaching license/certificate. Prefer relevant teaching experience.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary is based on experience and certification at a range from $45,300.00 to $83,500.00 as reflected in the Master Teacher Contract. Benefit options include section 125 health, vision, and dental coverage, subject to plan terms (for employees who work an average of 30 hours or more per week), voluntary benefits such as life insurance, long-term disability, and other ancillary insurance options (subject to applicable waiting periods, for employees who work an average of 30 hours or more per week), participation in VEBA to receive up to 1% of salary deposited into individual VEBA account (must be vested 5 years), participation in TRF My Choice: Retirement Savings Plan or TRF Hybrid Plan, investment program (403b) with up to 3% 401a match, paid Time Off, 4 personal days and 9 sick days. This will be prorated based on the start date. Unused paid leave days roll over into sick accumulated days, and use of the Wellness Gym (workout facility for all employees and guests ages 18+) and Marathon Health Clinic.
