Description

 

The Special Education Teacher (SPED Teacher) is a full-time position. Responsibilities include planning and implementing special educational services directly to students in the areas of reading, language arts, mathematics, or other authorized instructional areas in the least restrictive environment. He/she will work closely with the classroom teacher to modify and/or adapt classroom work. This role is designed to provide targeted academic support to students, enhancing their overall academic performance during the regular school day. In addition to teaching duties, the SPED Teacher at BMP will be tasked with work related to case management of students with diagnosed needs.


The Special Education Teacher is a qualified professional who meets the requirements to work in a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Denver. This position is hired by and directly accountable to the administration at Bl. Miguel Pro Catholic Academy.


The Special Education Teacher is expected to abide by the policies and procedures of the local school, the Archdiocese of Denver, and the Office of Catholic Schools. He/She cooperates with the principal and staff in providing an environment that promotes the ministry of Catholic education.

Requirements

 

Job Duties and Expectations


Special Education Teaching (.8)

  • Teach and act in accordance with doctrinal and moral teaching of the Catholic Church
  • Co-plan and co-teach in classroom(s) alongside general education teacher(s), implementing curriculum with fidelity
  • Provide in-classroom academic supports for students daily
  • Design supports and interventions
  • Adapt or modify educational activities and materials in coordination with general education teacher
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to identify students in need of academic support and intervention
  • Facilitate small group lessons and interventions
  • Use and monitor different technologies and educational platforms to maximize student success
  • Use data to develop targeted activities to support classroom learning
  • Compile data of student performance and communicate with student support services department and classroom teacher

Case Management and Supervisory Duties (.2)

  • Authoring and managing plans (ICLPs and 504s) for students with diagnosed mild, moderate, and significant disabilities with clear documentation of services provided
  • Supervise SPED paraprofessional
  • Facilitate meetings with MTSS stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively with local school district and 3rd-party therapists, coordinating schedules and therapies
  • Assist classroom teachers in the referral process (Education Modified)
  • Proctor assessments for students on caseload
  • Inform schoolwide structures and systems, especially MTSS
  • May deliver professional development related to supporting students with disabilities in the general education classroom
  • Facilitate meetings with teachers, parents, and other support professionals
  • Inform grant opportunities, as needed
  • Complete required trainings or credentialing as necessary
  • Participate in all Archdiocese of Denver and school-level professional development, in-service trainings and initiatives unless exempted or excused by administrator
  • Other job duties as assigned

Competencies, Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • Refrain from promotion or approval of, or living out of, any conduct or lifestyle that would reflect, discredit, or disgrace, or cause scandal in relationship to the Archdiocese of Denver or to be considered to be in contradiction with Catholic doctrine of morals.
  • Be a fully initiated Catholic in the communion of the Catholic Church and intentionally living out the five precepts of the Church (CCC 2041-2043)
  • Bachelor's degree, special education coursework preferred
  • Credentialing in Special Education required, or willing to become credentialed
  • Experience in classroom setting or comparable instructional role
  • Technologically adept with experience in using digital tools for instructional purposes
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage tasks and workload with desired outcomes
  • Complete required training, certification, and/or credentialing as necessitated by Archdiocese of Denver, school, and/or student need
  • Compliance with Safe Environment requirements
