Position Title:Special Education Teacher for Therapeutic Classroom (STARS)

Reports To:Principal / Director of Student Support Services
Program overview:
The STAR program is a specialized therapeutic classroom designed for students with average academic aptitude who face challenges in a traditional general education environment due to social, emotional, or behavioral needs. The program offers a highly structured and supportive setting with a low student-to-teacher ratio. Instruction is individualized and delivered in small groups to maximize student engagement and success.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a collaborative, dedicated, and compassionate special education teacher to lead instruction, assessment, and build a community. The ideal candidate will possess strong classroom management skills, therapeutic teaching techniques, and a passion for helping students develop social-emotional resilience while accessing academic instruction. The teacher will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student growth both academically and behaviorally.
Qualifications:
Valid Massachusetts teaching license in Moderate Disabilities or Severe Disabilities.
Experience working in a therapeutic or special education setting is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of positive behavioral supports and de-escalation techniques
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Knowledgeable about Common Core State Standards / Massachusetts Frameworks
Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment
Work collaboratively with educators, families, and support personnel
Knowledgeable of the Massachusetts Frameworks
Responsibilities:
Provide direct specialized instruction per students’ IEPs
Conduct educational assessments, write reports, and present at IEP team meetings
Compliant with timelines, deadlines, and writing IEP goals/objectives/progress reports
Monitor student progress using data to drive instructional decision-making
Able to provide guidance and direction for paraprofessionals
Work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team and with the administration
Promote inclusion and advocate for students
Write effective lesson plans that coincide with Standards-based goals and objectives that align with the Common Core
Effective communication skills and the ability to work well with students, staff, and parents
Be a positive role model for students
