  •   PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities across academic subjects and grade levels. This role designs and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), adapts curricula and lessons, and helps students acquire the academic, social and life skills needed to become independent, responsible citizens.

    TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
    • Develop and Deliver Individualized Education: Assess students’ abilities, determine educational needs and collaborate with parents and team members to develop IEPs that outline goals, services and accommodations Plan and deliver instruction across core subjects, adapting lessons to meet individual strengths, challenges and learning styles
    • Teach and Mentor Students: Provide direct instruction to students individually, in small groups or in self-contained classrooms, focusing on academic content, functional life skills and appropriate behavioral strategies
    • Collaborate with Students and Families: Maintain regular communication with parents, guardians, teachers, counselors and administrators about students’ progress, making adjustments to instruction and support as needed
    • Support Inclusive Education: Work alongside general education teachers to adapt lessons, co-teach and ensure that students with disabilities can participate meaningfully in classroom activities
    • Lead and Mentor Staff: Provide guidance to paraprofessionals and teacher assistants, ensuring they understand instructional plans, behavioral strategies, safety protocols and the implementation of accommodations and modifications.
    • Track and Document Progress: Maintain accurate student records, assess and document student performance, and update IEPs to reflect progress toward goals throughout the school year
    • Facilitate Transitions: Prepare students for progression from grade to grade and for life beyond school through instruction in academic, social, vocational and functional skills
    • Ensure Student Safety: Supervise students throughout the school day, including during transitions and on field trips, adhering to all district safety policies.
    • Professional Development: Stay current on special education laws, best practices, culturally responsive strategies and assistive technology. Seek opportunities for ongoing professional growth.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
    • Valid State certification in Special Education (065,165, 265)
    • Bachelors degree in Special Education or related field
    • Experience writing and implementing IEPs and using data to inform instruction.

    PREFERRED QUALIFIATIONS: 
    • Bilingual
    • Masters degree or advanced coursework in Special Education, behavior analysis or a related specialty. 
    • At least two years of successful classroom experience working with students with diverse learning needs, including experience in self-contained and/or inclusive settings.
    • Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive instructional methods.
     
      SALARY RANGE: Based on professional experience and NLEA contract
